Richard K. Hubbard navigated everything from large coast guard cutters to class A ocean racing yachts and square-riggers for 11 years. Since 1979 he has worked for the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (formerly the Defense Mapping Agency), where today he is a Marine Analyst. He also writes for professional maritime journals and sailing magazines, and remains an active sailor. He was the editor of the 1995 edition of Pub. No. 9, the American Practical Navigator. These quilts make you feel like you are in a candy shop -they are yummy! The patterns are bold and dynamic with a sweet color palette. These would be a joy to make, although I may want to snack on some sweet treats while sewing!

This book had me dancing from the moment I saw its cover! Barbara Groves and Mary Jacobson expertly use the layer-cake variety of prints in their designs teaching us how we can achieve the same wonderful results as we use our own stash of fabrics, pre-cut or not.I like that Barbara and Mary suggest how we can use leftover triangles in other projects, and the many other tips we get throughout the book. You see, sometimes one little tip can make all the difference in our quilt-making journey so I always make sure I read them all. I feel as if they were granting us a personal interview ("How did they know I was wondering about that?" is what I ask myself often as I read those tidbits). It is a "must-have"!

Hope that makes sense. The both of them (Marnie and Blix) send out vibes and receive them back, they kind of guide them to see who would be potential mates. Hence the Matchmaking moniker.Throw in the fact that you have neurotic mothers and MIL's, a pregnant hormonal sister who seems to have it all and a terminal illness. Whew, that a lot of stuff to cram into a book.This is book where you really suspend reality and laugh at the things that are obviously coming down the pike with more than a little foreshadowing. But I give the book four stars because it tugs at the heart and brings a little tear and some warm fuzzies too.Very mild potty language and some non descriptive sex scenes make this one you could pass along to your mom without worry.

That was one of my favorite statements from Blix. I was frankly disappointed when I perused the First Reads selections for this month. No Sci-Fi. No Paranormal. No interesting horror. Just like last month (which I passed on). Determined to read an "ordinary' novel if I had to, I closed my eyes and picked this one. Turns out I'm pleased to have chosen this book.Blix, the strange Great Aunt. My favorite character in a long time. She was wonderfully eccentric and lovable. The first half of this book was alternating POV's , which worked rather well. It enabled the reader to get to know both main characters and their thought processes. Because of Blix, I was sucked into the story more easily than I would have been if things had only been told from the Heroine's viewpoint. Because Marnie (the ?Heroine?) didn't always appeal to me. She was a bit too emotionally damaged, and she really didn't treat Jeremy (one of her love interests) all that well.There was family drama. There was love gone bad (and good). There was humor--I actually laughed out loud when Marnie and Patrick attempted to cook live lobsters. ( I hate to give a spoiler, but I will say that the lobsters won). Through it all, Blix made the entire story worthwhile, even when she wasn't physically present. And there was even just a touch of 'maybe' paranormal, which for me, made it even that much better. Best of all, it's a complete story. No 'Book 1'. No cliffhanger ending. I'd almost forgotten just how satisfying that can be.

Disclaimer: I got this book for free as part of my Prime membership.I enjoyed this book a great deal, but I couldn't buy the main romance. The guy is nice enough but I didn't believe he was meant for Marnie, or Marnie for him. It felt like they should just be good friends. There was so much else going on in the book that did work, so it's worth reading for a nice relaxing fun time. I think that was part of the problem, that the romance couldn't be slowly built from the start because there was a ton of other plot to get through, so it felt a bit rushed for me. A fun read, but I won't be rereading it.

What a waste of time. Main character is unlikeable. Her 3 love interests are character tropes. She cheats on her fiance with her ex husband, then ends up going with the neighbor who's heard their sex activities when she was cheating. Halfway through, I just started swiping through the pages quickly. Get this, her fiance (the one she cheats on) soounds like the perfect guy, but he's too "boring". Also, the author weirdly justifies cheating on your partner. Bet she did it in real life. Lol what a joke of a book.

Marnie knows where her life is headed. She's engaged to the love of her life, Noah, and together they will create a stable, ordinary life. Yes, Marnie can see her future. The problem is that she's 100% wrong.Noah's great-aunt Blix only meets Marnie twice, but she instantly recognizes a fellow spirit, another matchmaker who can see the magic and love in the universe. She's also convinced Marnie has a big, big life in store. And it doesn't involve Noah. It turns out old Aunt Blix might have been onto something, because Noah and Marnie's marriage goes south before it even starts. Reeling from the break up, Marnie is shocked to learn that she's inherited Blix's house in Brooklyn. Just one problem: moving to Brooklyn doesn't fit into Marnie's plans. This book wasn't profound literature, but it's a great summer read and a lot of fun. This is the first Kindle First selection I have honestly enjoyed. Most months, I don't even bother to download one. Don't hesitate to give this one a try.

A beautifully written book with children in mind. I read this to my six year old who loves all things non fiction, scientific adored this book. He did look at me curiously when we would go to page to page - he expected more "meat" to the information. While this relays the information in a way the young minds can grasp, it falls a bit short in length. It almost teases the reader with a bit of information but then goes to the next thing. That could be seen as a positive, however. When we finish reading one of the Baby Professor books, he is always wanting to know and learn more. Which catapults us into a search for more information on what we just read. I appreciate the help in the fostering of love of learning. On that, it definitely delivers! I wish there was more information contained in the book as well as the book ends so abruptly. With that said, I still highly recommend the book for young, curious children. If anything, it will build a curiosity that we as parents can supplement. I had an opportunity to read this book at a discount in exchange for my fair and honest review. The discount did not sway my opinion at all.

Great book for kids. This book gives kids ideas about places to see in South America. It's well written and the pictures are amazing. I would consider buying this for my Grandson if he were a little younger, although he loves good pictures, so may just get it for him because of the pictures. These "Around the Globe" books allows children and adults to see places they might not otherwise see such as: Iguazu Falls, on the border of Argentina and Parano. They are beautiful. I can imagine that children reading this series of books might want to see these things if their parents don't take them when children, then they might want to go as adults. It teaches the reader about culture and other races without prejudice or judgement which I find refreshing. There is a great picture of Huacachina which is a small town in the middle of sand desert at a natural lake, in Southwestern Peru. This book is just a great book in the aspect it inspires the imagination and gives a small yet detailed blurb on each place. I appreciate this series of books immensely.As a writer it gives me a goal to reach if I choose to write as a traveler.My grandson is in 2nd grade, is an avid reader, he reads way above his school grade. He told me that vivid pictures allow him to use his imagine to transport him to another place and time. I am a homeschool parent and we often take a break from our normal "book work" and study things topically. The information was good to be read to children and they can really grasp what these areas have to offer. Then the pictures just supplement that information. Baby Professor always uses great photos to illustrate and give many opportunities for kids to soak in information while taking in what that area looks like. With kids this is extremely important!We have taken this book to the next level as we continue our studies of South America and these wonderful landmarks. I was really interested to see what the "must see" places of South America were. It would be almost impossible to create a children's book to contain all the wonderful information about South America, but this is a very concise list. My daughter is two so she is a little young to fully understand the information that was presented in this Baby Professor book. However, she did ask questions about these places and understood the basic information and enjoyed looking at the photos. I'm sure this would be very appropriate information for school aged child.This kindle edition was flawless with it's formatting. It was simple and easy to navigate. When I read this I sat along with my two year old and she was able to swipe for me after reading each page. This book was an eye opener for me. I knew Carl Nordin as he was my confirmation teacher when I was 13. He was also on the church board and did a lot with the youth. He never said what happened to him during the war, but he was an intensly humble and grateful man. His story has opened my eyes and made me appreciate his sacrifice, his transformation and his convictions. In a day and age where fake news abounds and "truth" is subjective, this account of one man's experience may not be the most graphically jarring, but his journey through fear, death, guilt and pain brought his mind and soul to joy, life, forgiveness and peace. Every single kid in his bible classes are a testament to the transformation of Carl Nordin.

Interesting book.

Surfacy overview with litle to no detail. Mr. Nordin seems to have had an easy go of it as he certainly doesn't speak to the anquish and suffering of so many other POW. A wasted and dry read at best.

Carl was my friend. He used to take walks and stop by my office to visit. He was an incredible man with a very tender heart. This book tells the story of his struggles in WW II. He was captured in the Philippines and eventually taken to Japan. He spent the majority of the war in POW camps. This book accurately describes what they went through, yet without bitterness about their experiences. It helps the reader grasp the life of a POW in the pacific and their horrible treatment. Everyone should read this.

Carl Nordin was my great uncle, and I don't know why it took me so long to read his book, but I finally started it a couple of days ago. Three days later, I am almost finished. It is amazing how heartbreaking and inspiring his account is. I found myself many times audibly saying "wow" or something similar while reading about what he had to go through. Granted, he was not a professional writer, so it wasn't the most "polished" of books, but if you can get past the first part of the book, you will find yourself riveted to the story. It definitely is a "must read" for WWII buffs.

This book gave a realistic account of what those men went through on a daily basis. He captures the small moments of compassion and frustrations without dwelling on the well deserved resentment. This book truly shows how hard it is to dominate the human spirit. One of the best books I have ever read.

This is a very enlightening, but sad, account of POW's. Much to my surprise Mr. Nordin is from Siren, WI. So this book was doubly interesting to me as it contained information about people I actually know of and others who lived near to me. I live in NW WI. It just seemed like it brought the experience closer to home for me, and I could actually feel what some of these POW's must have been going through. The things these people endured for 4 long years is unbelievable and really makes me appreciate what these people have gone through for myself and others. I always knew of POW prisons and their treatment but never really realized how demeaning some of the treatment and conditions were and marvel at how they managed to survive. Highly reccommended to those interested in knowing the truth of such events.
