This is one of the finest books written about the Federal Convention; that critical pivot point in our history where educated delegates of strong convictions argued heatedly at times but in the end worked together to bring forth a framework by which the young colony-states could shape themselves and give birth to a nation.The weak and timid one-star or two-star reviews are evidence of the immense intellectual decline since 1787 as we move toward idiocracy and cognitive laziness. If you can't "get into" this book, you should not be allowed to vote.

Most people know that our US Revolutionary War was tough, but really do not realize just how tough and discouraging it was, and how close it came to failure. But almost everyone thinks that after that, the colonies realized the problems and dangers of being small, fragmented colonies and we generated this wonderful Constitution. Nope. After the war, the colonies, having just rid themselves of one strong government that oppressed them, became truly 13 separate countries. New Jersey and New York were firing cannon at each other across the Hudson River, competing for islands in the river. Each colony minted its own currency, had tariffs for commerce, its own militia. Britain, Spain, and Indians (a.k.a., "native Americans" who really were immigrants from Siberia but arrogant white Europeans label everything relative only to their own perspective) were invading. Many, maybe most people and leaders were against a strong central government and wanted to continue this way, even with problems and imminent disaster apparent. Only a few, including George Washington and his more activist thought-twin and prescient thinker Alexander Hamilton, kept pushing for one country with central government, a standing army to defend against the rest of the world, stable economic and financial institutions, etc. It took time, compromise, and frankly some trickery and concessions to get a constitution written and adopted. The leaders at the time were very discouraged and about to give up, and when it finally happened, they, not the author, called it "a miracle at Philadelphia". Which is exactly what is was, and we need to understand how people often do not do what is in their own best interests and need strong, inspired leaders to make the right things happen and protect us from our flaws, imperfectly to be sure but better than mob rule and disaster. Should be required reading for every American or student of government and human behavior. What seems obvious, inevitable, and excellent to us was despised, opposed, a hair short of impossible, and (to this day) quite imperfect, but has lasted well to this day. Wisdom, even if unpopular, and compromise, are key, both in short supply currently on all sides. Washington's farewell address (largely created by Hamilton) warned that if we developed a two-party system, every time one side gets into power, they will act to limit the other side, and later the other side will inevitably get into power and undo all the actions and work harder yet to "get" the first side, then the cycle repeats until the government is dysfunctional and dangerous as each side focuses only on winning against and beating the other party, which of course is exactly what we see today. Read this book, stay calm, and carry on as an American first, not first a Democrat or Republican or what ever. That we even made it to this point is amazing, read the book.

Not only is Catherine Drinker Bowen's accounting eloquent and logical, she manages to take us there as if by magic; we "feel" the humid air, the possibility of disease lurking around every corner, the lack of sanitation, the torment of mosquitoes that emerge at night unabated during that long hot summer of debate over the Constitution - the Great Experiment unfolding it's wings.A passage from the first paragraph of this remarkable book:<<<<"Over Philadelphia, the air lay hot and humid; old people said it was the worst summer since 1750. French visitors wrote home that they could not breathe. 'At each inhaling of air, one worries about the next one. The slightest movement is painful.' ">>Jefferson's unusual statement about the demigods was, as were most of his observations, astute in the moment. Truly it was a gathering of the finest minds available anywhere in the world, all collected at precisely the same time, with preservation of the new-found, hard won freedom uppermost in the psyche of all of them; determined to form as perfect a document of government as could be agreed upon;, along with a separate bill of rights, and the "miracle at Philadelphia" did come to pass. It was not without pain, flaws and disappointments for some, but what emerged from this period of time between May and September of 1787 has endured as the lighted lantern of a free people. One immense yet single goal, attested to "through baptism by fire" - by the magnificent, dedicated few, overcoming personal agendas to protect the future of the many. We sense the urgency to create a fail-safe document, mingling uneasily with the underlying fear that if mistakes were made now, all could be circumvented by the unscrupulous in the centuries to follow. We feel the intense, vibrant and varying personalities that tried to beat the political bushes enough to rout out the roaches that may be lurking in the document. It's such a mess today it's hard to justify the making of a central government without feeling somewhat foolish; but It was clear that something had to be done with the Articles of Confederation; the "sovereign states" had become so sovereign that they considered themselves untouchable with regards to sending monies to the common kitty to pay down debt. Nobody knew this better than George Washington; in the throes of the Revolution itself, his pleas for supplies, payrolls for his army, seemingly were tabled inexcusably, maddeningly - by the existing congress even in the face of possibly losing the war for liberty itself. So, after the was won under such duress (another miracle) the gathering of the "demigods", heeded the call together in high secrecy in Philadelphia for the forming of a central government, whose citizens were to be protected by a truly unique "Constitution" - even though those patriots such as Patrick Henry were absent in protest fearing another imperial government might be unfolding).This is truly a magnificent book, highly recommended for those who follow history. One observation the author makes clear is the fact that many Americans today don't know as much as they should about the debates; and I fear our history teachers may be to blame for some of it. Such an event needs constant fanning of a flame, interesting dialog, and too often it becomes dry and boring without that flame.Another "must have" accounting for anyone interested in the actual debates over the Constitution, the Library of America offers one that is entitled simply enough: "Debate on The Constitution", which is a venerable collection of the best and most eloquent of the many writings by the differing minds that were wrangling over it's writing and ratification at the time. The collection was "selected by Bernard Bailin and includes Benjamin Franklin's famous acceptance speech " I agree to this Constitution with all it's faults" - which is quite a missive in itself, of course.We all know how it turned out, but she takes us there again, with a strength of insight and devotion seldom seen. Yet another literary gem can be noted for posterity from CDB's book with this short, yet poignant verse of her own: "If all the tales are told, re-tell them, Brother. If few attend, let those who listen, feel."She speaks for many with those words; I know she speaks for me.

Using many first-hand original documents as sources, the author provides both the facts of the debates as well as the personal concerns of many of the important contributors to development of the US Constitution. Reading this book will help the reader to better understand the contents, nature, and concerns about the Constitution from those who struggled so valiantly to determine the form the US Government should take. This a purposeful and huge cosmology of Alan Moore's Northampton. He's lived and dreamed there his entire life. We wander through characters and language. Very complex. If you've read a good amount of James Joyce and Philip K. Dick, and have had at least a decent peek into John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, that would help ease your way immensely.This is not a simple work by any means, but rewarding. It's hilarious, heartbreaking and singular. I'll be thinking about this for the rest of my life. I'm glad to recommended to readers who want to climb into a complex read and remain there for a long while.This is a life's work.

This is a massive contemporary novel which upends all the rules of contemporary straight-ahead prose. Alan Moore’s "Jerusalem," published in 2016, is a highly experimental work, with each chapter told from a different character’s point of view, jumping around chronologically to visit times as long past as the early Middle Ages and as far distant as the projected end of the universe. In these ways it resembles quite a few modern novels.But its prose is a marvelous tangle of description, simile, and wordplay.Let’s begin with a feature that may well be off-putting for many readers—the obsessive specification of the exact streets and landmarks among which the action takes place: the grubby precinct of London which Moore refers to as “The Boroughs.” A map is provided in the endpapers of the book.Here’s a typical paragraph:He gestured drunkenly around them as they reached the bottom of the rough trapezium of hunched-up ground called Castle Hill, where it joined what was left of Fitzroy Street. This last was now a broadened driveway leading down into the shoebox stack of ’Sixties housing where the feudal corridors of Moat Street, Fort Street and the rest once stood. It terminated in a claustrophobic dead-end car park, block accommodation closing in on two sides while the black untidy hedges representing a last desperate stand of Boroughs wilderness, spilled over on a third.You can follow the action along on the map if you wish, but it doesn’t add a great deal to understanding the novel. Moore specifies street names when a character goes for a walk, including each and every turn. No one ever just walks down a generic street. This pattern is the one thing that annoyed me about his prose because it is so repetitious and mostly irrelevant. But it’s all of a piece with his desire to embed his fantastically baroque story in a thickly woven web of specific detail. His style reminds me of those Medieval illuminated manuscripts in which a text is ornamented with scrolls, flowers, and fantastic beasts crowding all the margins and other spaces into which something decorative can be inserted.Note how it’s not just a driveway, but a “broadened driveway; not a simple parking lot, but “a claustrophobic dead-end car park.” The vast majority of nouns are modified, often multiply: adjectives and adverbs abound.For the right sort of reader, the densely ornamented prose is not a forbidding dark hedge, but a maze of wonders. His writing flows nicely, even though reading some of his sentences aloud requires two or more breaths.He scatters metaphors and similes in profusion throughout the text. For instance, consider the next paragraph:When this meagre estate had first gone up in Mick and Alma’s early teenage years the cul-d-sac had been a bruising mockery of a children’s playground, with a scaled down maze of blue brick in its centre, built apparently for feeble minded leprechauns, and the autistic cubist’s notion of a concrete horse that grazed eternally nearby, too hard-edged and uncomfortable for any child to straddle, with its eyes an empty hole bored through its temples. Even that, more like the abstract statue of a playground than an actual place, had been less awful than this date-rape opportunity and likely dogging hotspot, with its hasty skim of tarmac spread like cheap, stale caviar across the pink pedestrian tiles beneath, the bumpy lanes and flagstone closes under that. Only the gutter margins where the strata peeled back into sunburn tatters gave away the layers of human time compressed below, ring markings on the long-felled tree stump of the Boroughs. From downhill beyond the car park and the no-frills tombstones of its sheltering apartment blocks there came the mournful shunt and grumble of a goods train with its yelp and mutter rolling up the valley’s sides from the criss-cross self-harm scars of the rail tracks at its bottom.He piles one figure of speech atop another, explores them in detail, indulges in word-play and creates prose that resembles less a walk along a path than a complex ballet with the reader bewildered in its center. Nothing much “happens” for long stretches, but the verbal action is relentless.In the world of Jerusalem the images of the dead are often accompanied by a string of after-images trailing and fading out behind them. Time after time Moore comes up with a new simile for this effect, clearly delighting in displaying his fertile imagination. The idea never “goes without saying.”Many readers will find this sort of thing off-putting; but if, like me, you find it delightful, there’s plenty of it: the novel is 1,262 pages long.So exquisitely mundane is most of the early narrative that the moments of fantasy leap out shockingly from the page, and even after these have accumulated for hundreds of pages it is stunning to find ourselves halfway through the novel plunged into an extraordinarily detailed and original afterlife world where most of the characters are “dead.”Much of the subject matter is grim, threatening, haunting (in both figurative and literal senses); but the prose is exuberant, playful, often amusing. Whereas most modern fiction pares away tedious description to immerse us in the action, Moore immerses us in the funhouse of his prose where we’re sometimes in danger of losing track of the plot altogether. In this book the point is in the telling, more than in the tale.Moore plays all kinds of linguistic games, writing in varied styles including Victorian gothic, Chandleresque hardboiled detective, and the sort of experimental punning mish-mash that makes up James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake in a chapter that embodies the tale of the author’s mad daughter, Lucia:Awake, Lucia gets up wi’ the wry sing of de light. She is a puzzle, shore enearth, as all the Nurzis and the D’actors would afform, but nibber a cross word these days, deepindig on her mendication and on every workin’ grimpill’s progress.I count at least ten puns or other sorts of wordplay in these two sentences alone which open the chapter allusively titled “Round the Bend.” It goes on like that for 48 dense pages.One chapter is written entirely in verse, beginning thus:Den wakes beneath the windswept porch aloneOn bone-hard slab rubbed smooth by Sunday feetWhere afternoon light leans, fatigued and spent,Ground to which he feels no entitlementNor any purchase on the sullen street;Unpeels his chill grey cheek from chill grey stoneThen orients himself in time and space.The desire to be oriented in time and space is constantly challenged. Although the novel is structured something like a mystery, there is no culminating Big Reveal. One major hanging plot thread never gets wrapped up at all. The last chapter brings together many scenes and characters earlier touched on, but not in a way that explains everything.Moore is best known as a writer for DC superhero comic books and as author of the similarly playful historical fantasy The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (the graphic novel, much better than the awful movie). But this is his masterpiece: dazzling, diverting, and utterly delightful.

There are two ways to get to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado--by foot (hiking or running) or motor vehicle (train or auto). This book is for those who like to climb by foot. It is slow, but that leaves time for the scenery to absorb into the soul. A hiker isn't in a hurry--the joy is truly in the journey.Just as some turns in a trail lead to a grand vista that urges the hiker to forgo forward progress and just sit to enjoy the view awhile, so this book provides the occasional grand vista to pause and reread. There are also plenty of smaller jolts of joy along the way that lead to a small and satisfied smile. Sometimes the hiker misreads the trail due to confusing landmarks and has to backtrack and recover the trail, so also this book has some confusing areas that have to be reread in order to regain the trail. This too is part of the journey.The review of this book in the New York Times is excellent. For those pondering this trailhead, I recommend reading that review--I leave the particulars to that review as it was well done and I have nothing to add.Just as a hike up a mountain isn't for a lot of people, so also this book isn't for a lot of people. It is for those who want to fully experience the journey. It is for those who want to stand at the earned summit and marvel at the world stretching away in all directions.

I was sicerely torn on how to rate this book. On the one hand, there are some amazing moments of transcendent depth, but there are also moments where I found myself wishing Mr. Moore had hired the services of a more stringent editor.All in all, I am glad I read this book, but there were times I felt like Moore was double dog daring me to stop reading.Those things said, this is a truly epic work of fantasy and can only be seen as a mammoth undertaking. Moore not only creates a rich world replete with pathos and joy but one of incredible depth that speaks to the sadness we all feel about places and times gone forever.

I had completely forgotten that I had pre-ordered this, and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived one day. Dobby is easily my favourite Harry Potter character, and represents so much good in the world, and this is a wonderful depiction of him and some of his memorable quotes from Chamber of Secrets. I really only can say that I wish they would have included the dialogue from Deathly Hallows, Part I, but you cannot have everything.

Very well done but will not stand being dropped. Not for kids as a play toy. Photo is from desk top drop onto floor.

This little Dobby figure is an excellent replica! The voice sounds just like his and the little book that comes with him is a sweet addition. It has quotes from Dobby and pictures. Very pleased with my Dobby especially since the detail is very much there!

I couldn't believe how great this was. Being a "potterhead" all thing related to the series I want to have. I didn't expect Dobby to be as perfect as his was. The voice is straight from the movie sound track and I think he says about a dozen dif things. VERY much worth the price.

My ol' lady loves Dobby and this was perfect for her for Christmas. Came just how described. Not very loud but it's Dobby's voice and sayings. Looks just like the little guy unlike some other products I have seen of him.

Just adorable. Gave it as a gift to a Harry Potter fan and she loves it. So cute with the different things it says. I tried it before wrapping it and almost kept it for myself. Nice gift. Fast delivery.

Preorder this and received it in April and just opened cause it is a gift for my daughter and I opened it to put it together and the head was broken

Got it for my 7-8 yr old niece for her birthday and she liked it. Her younger sister did too.

They were conceived out of financial need but were birthed by the prayer of George Leonard White, the treasurer at Fisk University. White formed and led the singers although he himself was not a musician. He did expect and receive the highest level of quality with it enduring regardless of personnel change within his term.The author also provides excellent expository insight into the hurdles faced by the group, including financial duress and the expected domestic racism. However the Jubilee Singers also encountered the issues of success such as loss of personal privacy and the occasional inflated ego. This is a story worth telling, one in an era so close after the end of slavery in which a group of African-Americans gained worldwide acclaim. What a miracle to be born into slavery then some years later to interact with such notables of the era as Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Queen Victoria, and DL Moody.
