Like all good biographies, this first full account of the life of Richard Daley does more than tell the story of an individual. In the course of telling Daley's tale--from his birth (in 1902) to his death (in 1976)--journalists Cohen and Taylor also chronicle the history of 20th-century Chicago. They capture the grittiness of Daley's boyhood--the day-to-day of life near the stockyards, the importance of ethnicity in local neighborhoods and the city's seemingly paradoxical combination of parochialism and diversity, dynamic growth and resistance to change. Initiated into machine politics as a young man, Daley quickly embraced the machine's values of order, allegiance, authority and, above all, the pursuit of power. Later, he ran the city in accordance with these values; the authors explain that he always assessed his options in terms of what would both enhance his power and encourage Chicagoans to stay in their proper place. Cohen (a senior writer at Time) and Taylor (literary editor and Sunday magazine editor of the Chicago Tribune) use the most famous crisis during his tenure, the 1968 Democratic convention, to illustrate how the mayor's rigid values dictated his actions--but more importantly, they say, his myopic passion for order worked together with his deep racism to shape modern Chicago. This is an uneven book. In the aggregate - it gives a great feel for the history of machine politics in Chicago, the roots and rise of Mayor Daley, the careful racial segregation of public housing, etc etc. I was looking for a view into Chicago history and I got an excellent one. I would say the book is way too detailed in many parts and found myself increasingly starting to surf through the book in search of more interesting sections. The sections on the 1960s, the role of the police, the 1968 convention - those are all WOW sections. But other parts of the book were excessively detailed and dry. You have to want to know a lot about Daley and Chicago political history to make it through this. In my case I actually did, but probably not for everyone.

A masterpiece that not only serves as a biography of Richard Daley, but shows us how the City of Chicago came to be what it is today. There have been some serious power brokers that have served as Mayors in America, but Richard Daley, in terms of acquiring and holding power, must rank at the top of that group. The book is detailed, but for those looking to see how municipal government works this might not be the book for you. In Chicago if Daley wanted it done it was done. Not a lot of grass roots organizing involved in getting decisions made and executed. The book properly focuses on how Daley's perch as Chair of the Cook County Democratic machine was just as valuable to him, in many respects, as the Mayors job, allowing him to exert control not only in Chicago, but across the entire State of Illinois. The Democratic Convention of 1968 is covered very well, and is a history that many of us are familiar with. What I learned beyond my prior understanding was how official and conscious government acts by Daley contributed to the segregated housing landscape that existed in Chicago at that time. He molded the City, and his vision did not include integration of housing. Daley, due to these policies, had to try to face down Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who came to Chicago to bring the civil rights movement to the urban north. Daley did not choose to overtly resist, but chose tactics that obfuscated his goals, promised progress, but delivered little.A fascinating book that should be read by all those interested in the acquiring and holding of power. Daley, from that perspective and on a smaller scale, rivaled LBJ as a power politician. The book honestly depicts some of the awful things he did, but does its best to give Daley some credit where it might have been due. Having just read the Tom Menino book I think it could be fairly said that Daley predated Menino in putting forward malapropisms. A couple of great ones: "Gentlemen, get this thing straight once and for all. The policeman isn't there to create disorder. The policeman is there to preserve disorder.""Today the real problem is the future."This book is highly recommended.

AMERICAN PHARAOH by Cohen and Taylor contains 614 pages and 16 pages of black and white (not glossy) photographs. The book focuses on Mr. Daley's technique of ensuring cooperation through the use of patronage jobs, and on Daley's methods for keeping black people segregated in black-only housing projects. Hundreds and hundreds of pages are devoted to race relations. However, topics relating to business development are given short shrift. Daley's methods for converting Chicago from its dilapidated state in the 1950s to the gleaming showpiece that it became in the 1970s receive only a few pages of writing. In this regard, AMERICAN PHARAOH is a strangely lopsided book.PATRONAGE JOBS. Patronage jobs are distinguished from civil service jobs. Patronage jobs are awarded by ward bosses, while civil service jobs are not. The mayor preceding Daley (Martin Kennelly) was anti-patronage and had a war on patronage. He had insisted on using civil service exams in the hiring methods. Patronage workers are government workers who knew their jobs were at stake, unless they contributed time and money to election campaigns. (pages 92, 116, 121, 122). Chicago had 50 wards. Each ward was allotted a number of patronage jobs. For example, Daley's political base, the 11th ward, had 2,000 patronage jobs (p. 156). For any given branch of city government, from 50-75% might be patronage jobs. Each job applicant needed to document his precinct work, in applying for the job. For Daley's benefit, each patronage job was equivalent to getting ten free votes (p. 159).PASSIVE HYPOCRACY. When faced with issues of segregation in schools or public housing, or violence in public housing, Daley responded with "vague expressions of sympathy," that is, with "passive hypocracy." Daley's passive hypocracy is described on pages 134, 172, 322, 340, 403, 410, 431, and 465.WHY BLACKS VOTED FOR DALEY. Although Daley was against open housing and school integration, blacks voted for him because he handed out patronage jobs (p. 301-302, 339). What also helped Daley is that blacks accepted school segregation, as they didn't want their kids in hostile white schools (p. 437). Also, blacks (e.g., Kenneth Campbell) worked against school boycotts, while other blacks (e.g., Wendell Green) were apologists for the racist superintendent of public schools (Benjamin Willis) (p. 313-314).DALEY BUILT BARRIERS TO KEEP SLUMS FROM EXPANDING. Daley used Ryan Expressway (7 lanes in each direction) to separate the white south side from the black belt (p. 188-189, 229). Daley razed 100 acres of slums in between the black belt and the Loop, and in its place built middle class apartments, with rents that would keep poor blacks away (Lake Meadows; Prairie Shores) (p. 176-177). These new apartments were built near important employers (Ill. Inst. Technology, Reese Hospital). In planning the Univ. Illinois at Chicago, Daley made certain that it was built in the Harrison-Halsted neighborhood, just west of the Loop. The goal was for the campus to act as a barrier between black housing to the west (Addams House) and the Loop. In ten years, Harrison-Halsted neighborhood became a white neighborhood (p. 224-233). Slums in Hyde Park (near Univ. Illinois) were razed and replaced with middle class private apartments (University Apartments). Once occupied, the average income in the area increased 70%. University Apts stood as a barrier between the University and the ghettos to the north.BLACK VS. WHITE HOUSING PROJECTS. To ensure the desired location of new black housing projects, Daley selected his own executive (Alvin Rose) for the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA). In other words, to ensure that new housing projects would be black-only, Daley had them built only in black neighborhoods (p. 201). Massive housing projects were built in 1966. These were black-only (Hilliard, Ickes, Dearborn, Stateway, and Taylor) and white-only (Trumbull Park, Lathrop, Lawndale Gardens). The CHA kept separate waiting lists for the black projects and white projects (p. 331-334). The black housing projects were considered to be "filing cabinets for the poor" and were populated by a disproportionate number of single mothers (p. 183-188).FUND-RAISING TECHNIQUES. To ensure that people would vote for his bond initiatives, Daley made certain to have them decided in low-turnout elections, that is, April elections, where he could count on votes from his patronage employees (p. 289). To ensure an increased sales tax, Daley side-stepped the voters in city elections, and made use of a loophole that allowed state legislature instead to vote for approval of the city tax. This resulted in more funds for an exposition center, airport, highways, and mass transit (p. 166).DALEY'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS. In the years before Daley, Chicago was in the state of decline, with losses in manufacturing jobs. Sales in the Loop were plummeting (p. 164). Daley managed to get funding to improve city clinics, street lights, potholes, street sweeping, water fluoridation, paving roads (p. 167-169). Daley's contribution to O'Hare Airport was to convince the airlines to absorb the cost of operating and expanding the airport. O'Hare was the world's only self-supporting airport (taxes were not used) (p. 233-237). The Loop revival (1955 to 1970) included Prudential Building, Sears Tower, Equitable Building, Gateway Center, One and Two Illinois Center, Dirksen federal court, Kluczynski Building, Marina City (p. 292-293, 504-505). To ensure success in the Loop revival, Daley hired talented "whiz kids," not patronage workers (p. 373-377). McCormick Place is another Daley accomplishment (p. 293, 433, 510).ELIZABETH WOOD. The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) was established in 1937, and the mayor at the time (Kelly) appointed Elizabeth Wood. Wood's philosophy was "managed integration" where blacks would be moved into a white project, but not in numbers(10-15%) enough to inspire whites to move away, and to make sure that when a white moved out he was replaced with another white. Wood tried to convince CHA to admit blacks to all-white projects. Also, her plan was to admit only higher quality blacks to housing projects (and to refuse the criminal element). Wood refused to hire patronage workers. Eventually, Wood was forced out, and she moved to New York City. Of course, all of Wood's innovations were eliminated, resulting in a return to strictly all black and all white housing projects (p. 70, 101-109).FRANCIS KEPPEL. Francis Keppel was U.S. commissioner for education. His job was to ensure compliance with Civil Rights Act of 1964, which required integration standards be met in order to receive federal money for schools. If Chicago failed to meet the integration standards, Chicago would lose $32 million. At this time, controversy surrounded these schools: Fenger (white only), Altgelt (black only), Orr (white only), and Marshall (black only). On Oct. 1, 1965, Keppel declared Chicago schools to be in non-compliance with Civil Rights Act. But Daley fought back by insisting on an investigation of Keppel, and by consulting President Johnson (LBJ). LBJ caved in to Daley's request because LBJ wanted Daley's support in the upcoming 1968 election. Keppel was then removed from his position as watchdog for the Civil Rights Act, and Daley got the federal money (p. 335-336, 350-353).CONCLUSION. As is evident, most of the book is about race relations. If you need details of Daley's accomplishments relating to business, economic development, highways, transportation, manufacturing, and such, one might want to consult another source. For those interested in proceeding to a more detailed book, I might recommend CHICAGO POLITICS -- WARD BY WARD by David K. Fremon.

This is the 10th anniversary edition that I'm reviewing, which means that there should be 10 years worth of reviews already, and anyone who is a Neil Gaiman fan will have already read it.That said, here goes: it an old idea that you've seen before in a couple of Star Trek episodes and who knows elsewhere: the Greek gods or some other gods (in this case, pretty much all gods, in any pantheon that ever existed) are (or were) real! They derive their power from being worshiped, and only die if they are forgotten.The twist: believers bring their gods with them when they emigrate. We have old world gods in the new world. New gods don't get along with the old ones, and a conflict ensues.We follow one individual, Shadow, who isn't himself a god, but who might be employed by one, on journeys to various odd locations in the U.S. which are focal points of power. Not knowing much lore, he nevertheless has to do his best to fulfill his employer's missions, feeling his way through potential dangers and political intrigue.

Right up front I should admit, I'd never heard of Neil Gaiman before I read an enthusiastic newspaper review about this book and decided to preorder it a few days ago. Last night, it was wirelessly delivered to my Kindle and this morning, I picked it up and started reading. Almost instantly, I was so absorbed and lost in the storytelling experience that I didn't do anything else until I finished it a few hours later.It's a short book; it's enchanting; it's very well written...definitely top-quality fantasy literature. I'm not a fan of fantasy literature, but this book swept me away into such a delightful and fascinating series of incredible adventures--or should I say misadventures--that I could not pull myself away. The author is correct to warn that this is not a fable for children...the reality is far too stark and dark, and there are definitely some adult themes. "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" is a tale about a lonely bookish seven-year old whose life takes a terrifying turn into a dark and creepy reality. The child is never named, but in recent interviews, the author admits that this child is very much like he was at that age. The child lives in the lovely English countryside of Sussex--the same environment where the author grew up. And like Gaiman, the child is wise, responsible, and moral beyond his years. The parents are blithely confident that nothing bad could happen to their brilliant bookish son in such a bucolic setting. But of course, bad things can, and do happen, especially to the pure and innocent...The parents have no idea that the Hempstocks--an eleven-year-old girl, her mother, and grandmother--who live by a pond at the end of the lane, are really a group of immortals who play at being human. Our seven-year-old child makes friends with the girl, Lettie Hempstock, and she introduces him to the pond, which is really an ocean. Eventually, our narrator and Lettie take a trip into a higher plain of reality that is entered somehow through the property owned by the Hempstocks, and so begins a series of remarkable misadventures with unforeseen consequences.This novel is a heroic tale about the age-old battle between childhood innocence and mythic forces. The book will charm you, fill you with awe, make you feel on edge, surprise you, and make you want to keep on reading no mater what important obligations you might have waiting for you to accomplish.Since finishing the book this afternoon, I was so curious about this fine writer that I started doing research into his life, philosophy, and writing. It seems that in prepublication interviews, Gaiman says that he's prouder of this particular work than anything else he's ever written...and, as I learned today, this is an author who has had an insanely prolific career spanning blockbuster successes across a large number of different creative media. He says he's put an enormous amount of effort into writing and rewriting this book in order to get the tone, words, and dramatic focus just right. A number of critics have already said they consider this work to be as close to sterling literary fiction as Gaiman is ever likely to get.Indeed, I was very impressed. For me, this work is, without doubt, first-rate fantasy and escapist fiction...and very fine literature, as well. It delivers a highly imaginative, fabulous and fascinating fable that envelops, and attempts to explain, everything in the space-time continuum. Yes, it's that ambitious! It had me hooked from the first to the last page. Simply put: it is an incredible gem of a novel.

As the title of this review clearly states, I saw the TV series before I read this book, in fact I did not know this book existed and I was quite certain that it would not be a book I would enjoy reading, after all, the series revealed all the secrets.Well I was wrong this book is full of highways and byways, I touched in the series treatment and in fact has more depth than those eight epidodes could ever dream of and although it never got to the end of the book, in fact it did not even make it to the House on the Rock, the series was an excellent way for me to pick up something that I should have read years ago.The characters all fully drawn, the plot is well paced and the author is true to his premise throughout, which for me anyhow make this a five star book. When archetypes are needed they are used and used with a deliciously ironic effect. This is the sort of book I could put down and come back to, until of course I received the final chapters. Although the ending is foreshadowed more than once, and I will not spoil any else's enjoyment of this book by pointing it out, I was caught up in the narrative that I could not suspend my disbelief for long enough to puzzle it out. Although I look forward to another season of American Gods, knowing what I know now, will certainly allow me to cast a more critical eye on the transformation of this delightful adventure to the small screen, and I expect great things from the screen writers as they weave the rest of this tale into their streaming video offering.

Interesting at the beginning but within first fifty pages I got lost, didn't know which direction the story was going. The novel has some interesting chapters scattered in between the main story but I got disappointed that they turned out to be independent stories with no connection to the main story. Some of the description of the so called gods, their clothing, their looks and the dietary habits was nauseating. Because of so many rave reviews I completed the novel and the question that I had in my mind 'what's the point?' remained unanswered.

Dear, dear how I've loved this book. After a long hiatus from reading novels, I picked this one up on the basis of others' reviews. It was everything that I could have asked for in a fantasy novel: a diverse set of compelling characters, a sense of mystery and doom, emotional connection, a sense of history intertwining with the present. Clearly a modern classic and, though it is set in America, a work that plays with the idea of interweaving history, fantasy, and action in a way that is reminiscent of the the classics of the fantasy genre. A beautiful book and a world and vision that I hope Gaiman continues to explore for years to come.

I am an avid Lisa fan, and own 99% of all her published work. This novel doesn’t disappoint. I was swept away to another land, and learned about the heartbreaking events from back to back wars, and the awe inspiring actions of the haenyeo at a little place called Jeju.Lisa’s books often cover a range of time periods in China, so this was a refreshing change that sweeps you away to Korea. I was involved with my characters, crying when they cried and laughing when they laughed.Ms. See has once again managed to entwine an amazing tale of womanhood, survival, and courage into the historical wonders and atrocities that happened in a land and time far away. I regretted finishing the book, and at the same time, I am already planning to read it a second time very soon. Like all of Lisa’s books, this book is something you will want to add to your collection, so you can revisit the characters again and again.

It's amazing the power of a book can have on a life and I am not talking about this one. Somewhere some nameless bureaucrat decided that the citizens of a Korean island, Jeju, needed copies of the book, Heidi, set in the Swiss Alps. Copies were distributed and for some reason the citizens fell in love with it. They sat around and read it as families and discussed it at work. It made a difference in people's lives. I just loved that story.I have always admired Lisa See's books but I struggled with this one on several different levels. Yes, It was interesting story and I learned quite a bit but the violence in it was a real problem for me. At about 60% through I almost set it aside as it was so graphic. Yet I kept on and, in the end, I am glad I did.It is the story of a matriarchal society where the women work as haenyeo divers. They dive in the ocean and harvest the sea's treasures including abalone and octopus. They have amazing body chemistry to withstand the cold and the hardship. The men stay home and tend the children and make light meals. Of course, it is not as good as it seems. Property is still in the man's name. They often take the women's wages and gamble and drink it away. As their daughters grow up they take over the child raising and food preparation and the men are left with nothing to do. As the women trudge home from a long day of sea harvesting, they come home and clean and cook and mind children. It's not as idyllic as it seems.Because of Jeju's location, it has a long history of occupation first by the Japanese then the Americans. Both are cruel and there is massacre after massacre. Villages are burned and large burial grounds appear. Life is a constant struggle and they soon learn not to say anything because of all the informants to all the different competing military factions.The story is told around two best friends's lives, Mi-ja and Young-sook. They grew up together and became divers and then their paths diverged after marriage and their struggles will break your heart. While I suspect most will be moved Young-sook, it is Mi-ja's story that grabbed my heart.An interesting book that gave a glimpse into another way of life that I had no idea about before reading it.

Two friends spend their lives loving and hating each other, being haunted by the mistakes affecting them and their haenyeo community. They are women divers who have learned to dive without the use of diving masks, oxygen or any other supportive equipment. They rely on learning to breathe in vital air and breathe out the song of sumbisori, air let out with a unique sound for each woman.They live on Jeju Island off the southern coast of Korea, a land they believe was created by the Shaman Goddesses, creating a land of lava rocks, cones and walls. The residents have created a matriarchal society loved by each resident. Their story is a celebration of life!Young-Sook has tremendous respect for her mother who is Chief of the haenyeo in one of the local communities until she dies in an accident while diving. Another young woman has another accident that changes her life forever. Their work guarantees survival, especially in the troublesome times that soon follow. Jeju Island residents are the subjects of the Japanese Army who have invaded the country and mandated laws of behavior, inflicting death on many for the slightest infraction of rules.Mi-ja is the daughter of a Japanese collaborator. This reputation haunts her for her entire life. Even though Young-Sook’s mother takes her in with kindness and teachers her to be a haenyeo, Young Sook’s grandmother despises her and will never trust her, a belief that will literally become part of Mi-ja’s choices during one of the most tragic, devastating moments of the story. Young Sook marries the love of her life but Mi-ja marries a man who is evil personified, an act none will understand until it is too late and after too much betrayal and damage. An uprising called the 4.3 incident instigates the death of thousands. The deaths to three members of Young-Sook’s family are tragically depicted, all because of Mi-ja’s response to a request begged by her best friend.The love between these two women will stay strong, although readers will for a time doubt the primitive and passionate aspects of that love. Scientists and sociologists will make this community a subject of lengthy study and amazed respect! It is the children of these women who will clarify truth for them and the readers. The take-away of this book is that if we don't get President Trump under control by changing his character through prayer, we'll reap a destructive future. Um, didn't we in the evangelical community support this guy before he was President and despite the weekly, & sometimes daily, demonstration of his base character? The fact that looking across the church spectrum we can find no one who will accuse him of having any trait of Christ-likeness suggests we are closing the barn door long after the horse has gotten out. We have invoked the dire things we now fear; God is granting us what we asked for. We are crafting a nation that looks more like pre-war 1930's Germany than a beacon of the Lord's love to a lost world.I agree with the author, Mr Johnson, that we need to start praying earnestly. But not for a change of heart in President Trump, but for a change of heart in ourselves and repentance for where we have brought our nation because of him. We need to ask God to shine his revealing light on our heart to show us 'how we got here'. Only after we deal with that can we ask the Lord what we should do going forward.I thank Jeremiah Johnson for being candid about his journey in our country's current political season. This book can be a springboard for any of us to ask God for our healing, for a heart renewed from repentance, and the assurance of a bright healthy future infused with His love; regardless of our political circumstances.

Jeremiah’s prophetic words are a great source of wisdom to me as an intercessor. As a retired professional programmer, I cannot recommend this book to beginners, or to programmers who want to learn Prolog. The casual style fails to cover the language, it's weak on examples and weak conceptually.

Poorly written and formatted. It mars the beautiful Prolog language. I learned to not trust Amazon rating because it's heavily affected by "reviewers" who got the ebook for free.

Inconsistent and hard to read.

Good book, overall. The real key to me is that this is a very small language. I kept looking for more than there really was. This book is a good deal for the Kindle, but the paper copy is a lot more than I think that the information is worth.

Ordered this book to help me understand Prolog. Its gives a basic overview of the topic, however the formatting I think messes up is kind of confusing (kindle version). In my opinion, the examples were kind of odd. But I guess that's what you get from a book that should take you a day to get through.

A lot of code in this book(read in kindle) cannot be displayed correctly.

Chapter 8 and 9 seem to be copied from another book, and the rest of the book is a summary of a self study session. It is a decent summary though, hence the extra two stars.

I feel like a prodigy in the Java programming world. This book has helped me quickly advance from novice to expert over the past week. It is good how intuitively the learning flow of this book is layed out. It progresses just as it should and helped me learn quickly. When it says success in a day it isn't lying.

Great words of wisdom. The only part of the book I don't like, is that it is like a copy of Father Tim's journal and much of it is like copied long hand, handwriting and sometimes harder to read...but it is kind of neat, because it feels like reading over his shoulder into his personal journal of inspiring letters and inspiring passages he has collected, but I would have preferred regular typeface.

I love anything written by Jan Karon. A Continual Feast is is full of comfort as noted in title. Written as though Father Tim wrote it himself. I really enjoy reading through this from time to time.

The book was in excellent condition. If you are a Father Tim fan you will want to add this book to your collection. I LOVE it! Purchased used.

What a wonderful compilation by Jan Karon, one of my favorite authors. The book is inspiring and alsoshows a little more of what Father Tim was thinking and believing. Choose this book to send to a shut-inyou know ---it will help the person feel better...more hopeful, and comforted. It also draws one to understandmore about God and what He desires of us as His children. Well put together, I am enjoying this book.

This is like reading a notebook that Father Tim has that he writes sayings, quotes, verses, and poems. It is written in his "handwriting" and what he would sometimes base his sermons on. It is a wonderful book to add to your collection. It is part of The Mitford series written by Jan Karon.

I really like this set - can't believe how quickly I'm picking up Italian. However, you DEFINITELY have to follow the instructions. You need a half an hour at a time and will need to repeat some lessons. Plus, you must really do it every day (or at least almost every day) otherwise you begin to slip. The one complaint I have is that sometimes, since the words are spoken by real Italians with serious accents, I have a hard time understanding what was said and therefore am not sure what to repeat. I had a few words I realized down the line that I had been saying incorrectly all along (I thought it was a word beginning with a "B" and it was actually a "V" in one case. Some kind of written glossary to go along with it would help :)

My husband and I have, in the last few years taken two trips to Europe and though we were only staying for a couple weeks wanted to learn a bit of the language in order to make an effort to at least be able to say the polite phrases and to understand the basics. I was not looking for a comprehensive program, nor was I looking to continue on to a more challenging program.This set was recommended by my sister who has a degree in Language and has learned and speaks several languages fluently. She advised me that Pimsleur was one of the best programs on the market for what I was looking for, and she was right.I have found that any effort that I have made to speak the language (no matter how horribly mangled-it appears that it is all about the sincere effort) has been met with appreciation and has often resulted in a more friendly and pleasurably stay. I'm NOT fluent, nor am I a quick study. I used polite/useful phrases from the series frequently in my travels such as: Hello, How are you, excuse me, do you speak English? I do not speak Italian, Where is the bathroom, the list goes on. Any attempts seem to be appreciated, and for me it is worth the time for me to learn a little to be able to get around a little easier. Also, it is fun. I can take the cd's in my car and work on them on my commute. Perfect!This will not teach you all the Italian you want to know if you are looking to speak fluently, but for a traveler, I thought it was perfect and it was both useful and fun.I would highly recommend this product for those traveling to Italy that would just like to know a bit of Italian. You can always build onto it later if you wish to, but for the traveler it is a very nice program.My one wish for these sets would be a booklet that gave a basic run-down on the chapters. With an audio only format sometimes I did not catch the word immediately and found myself looking up a few words on-line in order to understand how they were spelled so I knew if I was pronouncing them correctly. I'm a visual person, what can I say? Other than that I felt this was a highly effective program and would definitely look at other items in this series for our next adventure.

These CDs would be fantastic if you are just starting to learn - very, very basic for level '0' beginners. The price is right for $20; and it is a fabulous deal if you know nothing about the language! Do love the way that these are set up - audio is clear, quick lessons, verbal repetition, pronunciation, building on each lesson, and reinforcement of memory with previous learned vocabulary - all the right stuff! The CDs even come in a nice zip case. Note: there is NOT an on-line visual supplement to these particular "basic lesson" CDs as mentioned in other reviews. The on-line access is only a 1 page 'how-to' use this course which is explained verbally in the beginning of the first CD.I purchased these to supplement/reinforce a local community Italian class I am taking and to try to hone my listening skills with faster speech. I consider myself a beginner, but these were much too, too basic for me. Only got to the 3rd disc and felt that I personally needed slightly more advanced lessons (somewhere slightly higher than their version of basic beginner). Sadly will return these discs.Would love to purchase Pimsleur for next level since the learning structure & process seemed to be good, BUT their prices are much to high for the next advanced sets!!

Sure, some of the basic phrases are there, but an absurd level of repetition with major deficiencies. Does it really take almost 10 minutes of repetition to distinguish between "Italiano" and "Italiana and "Americano" and "Americana"? Sometimes phrases are repeated to the point of parody, and just when you're relieved that they've moved on, suddenly they're back to the previous phrases (not just once or twice for review, but over and over). Most of the last two lessons are an apparent conversation between a woman and the most clueless bachelor on the planet. "Would you like to have drinks at my place, Miss?" "I am not Miss, I am Mrs." "Oh, I'm sorry, Mrs. But would you like to have drinks at my place at 7?" "Not at 7, not at 8, not at 9." "Or would you like to have dinner with me?" (Many more variations of the same.) "Absolutely not. Do you understand?" "Oh, I understand. You do not want to have dinner with me." Etc. Perhaps that's useful for some young lady, but as I'm in my 60s, I would just like to order at a restaurant... which is NOT covered. Oh well. It's perhaps slightly useful and it's Monty Pythonesque qualities were amusing.

Save your school tuition and buy this instead. Learning any language later in life is difficult in any case. These lessons are the best that I have experienced.

Great course, but needs to cover MORE. It basically covers only the most rudimentary phrases. "Where is Via___". Nothing about ordering at restaurants, finding transportation etc.

I like listening to lessons on a CD player. My problem with these tapes, is an inability to hear the exact pronunciation. The english speaker, speaks slowly and distinctly while the italians speak way too rapidly.... I know in real life that's the way they speak but this is a lesson... should be slower. Especially, the man speaker. I have to actually look up the words so I can say it correctly. They also waste time with the use of the word, "want" and then say that it is impolite to use it... so why do they include it in the tapes?
