From the Back Cover

"The creation of the United States of America is the greatest of all human adventures," begins Paul Johnson's remarkable new American history. "No other national story holds such tremendous lessons, for the American people themselves and for the rest of mankind." Johnson's history is a reinterpretation of American history from the first settlements to the Clinton administration. It covers every aspect of U.S. history--politics; business and economics; art, literature and science; society and customs; complex traditions and religious beliefs. The story is told in terms of the men and women who shaped and led the nation and the ordinary people who collectively created its unique character. Wherever possible, letters, diaries, and recorded conversations are used to ensure a sense of actuality. "The book has new and often trenchant things to say about every aspect and period of America's past," says Johnson, "and I do not seek, as some historians do, to conceal my opinions." Johnson's history presents John Winthrop, Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, Cotton Mather, Franklin, Tom Paine, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, and Madison from a fresh perspective. It emphasizes the role of religion in American history and how early America was linked to England's history and culture and includes incisive portraits of Andrew Jackson, Chief Justice Marshall, Clay, Lincoln, and Jefferson Davis. Johnson shows how Grover Cleveland and Teddy Roosevelt ushered in the age of big business and industry and how Woodrow Wilson revolutionized the government's role. He offers new views of Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover and of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and his role as commander in chief during World War II. An examination of the unforeseen greatness of Harry Truman and reassessments of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, and Bush follow. "Compulsively readable," said Foreign Affairs of Johnson's unique narrative skills and sharp profiles of people. This is an in-depth portrait of a great people, from their fragile origins through their struggles for independence and nationhood, their heroic efforts and sacrifices to deal with the `organic sin' of slavery and the preservation of the Union to its explosive economic growth and emergence as a world power and its sole superpower. Johnson discusses such contemporary topics as the politics of racism, education, Vietnam, the power of the press, political correctness, the growth of litigation, and the rising influence of women. He sees Americans as a problem-solving people and the story of America as "essentially one of difficulties being overcome by intelligence and skill, by faith and strength of purpose, by courage and persistence...Looking back on its past, and forward to its future, the auguries are that it will not disappoint humanity." This challenging narrative and interpretation of American history by the author of many distinguished historical works is sometimes controversial and always provocative. Johnson's views of individuals, events, themes, and issues are original, critical, and admiring, for he is, above all, a strong believer in the history and the destiny of the American people.

This book is not a history of the events in US history but a history of the social, economic, and political trends, influences, and effects of those events. I am reading this text simultaneously with two other US history texts. That is, I read of a period of time in one, then the other, and finish with this text. One text is probably more liberal, a typical college text. The second is more conservative, written by college professors. This book by Paul Johnson, a British fellow, is my favorite. It is a great supplement for the college text. He can make the most interesting connections. For instance, the British reaction to the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494 where the Pope gave what is now Brazil to the Portuguese (Pg 9). Or why the "failure of the Roanoke colony may have been a blessing in disguise" (Pg 18). For one, there was no religious foundation. If you go to Jamestown today, the Christian influence is obvious. It also was based on capitalism being "financed by private individuals and the competitive money-market" (Pg 24) with no intervention by the government. He also does not miss an opportunity to tie in the impact of Christianity in the foundation of America and the effects of secularization, "with the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, the world slowly turned to secularity" (Pg 80). This text has no pictures, maps, or charts; I leave that up to the first text. This text is a great read for the scholar; probably boring for others. I recommend this text! It must be read with discretion, however. One error I have found is his crediting Samuel Wilberforce with leading the effort to end the slave trade in Great Britain. Actually, it was his father, William Wilberforce, who gets that credit. There is forgiveness.

A great writer who really makes history very enjoyable to read. This is the second book of Johnson's I have read, and both have been brilliant. He understands what history means, and relays it in such a profound and understandable way. Although an Englishman, he seems more than capable of writing on US history. Just as his book about the Jews was an excellent saga even though a gentile. His work should be required reading for anyone interested in how America has gotten where it is at present. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of his works.

OMG!!!! This is a really long book (977 pages before you get to the footnotes) and it's broken up into only 8 chapters. I don't know about you, but I can't devote 4 or 5 hours in one sitting to reading ONE chapter. But I started reading it a little bit at a time probably 3 months ago. And, honestly, I was enjoying it overall because although I'm well educated, there are still a lot of holes in my knowledge of American history and I was hoping to get a good overview. I "learned" a lot (more about this in a moment) in the early going, but I was tired of working away on it so I resolved to finish off the last 250 pages or so in one day. Just do nothing but read until I was done. Well, things started getting a little strange right around Warren G. Harding who, according to the author, was a fabulous president who really wasn't responsible for the Teapot Dome or any of his other scandals. (Harding was a Republican.) Fast forward to Herbert Hoover (a Republican) who, according to the author, handled the Great Depression really, really well and had all his ideas stolen by the Democrat FDR (who apparently never did anything good in his entire presidency). Hmmmm. I seem to be sensing a theme here. Fast forward to Democrat LBJ and the horrible things he did to the country by trying to help little old ladies and the poor. Hmmmm. I kind of like Medicare. But then it REALLY gets interesting. Apparently, the Republican Nixon was the greatest president in the history of the world who handled the Vietnam War beautifully. Apparently, it was "the blacks," those lazy, meddling white students and the liberal media that turned the public against Vietnam and it was a totally winnable war (the author really needs to check out Ken Burns documentary and listen to the tapes where Nixon says that he knows the Americans can't win the war, but he won't leave because he wants to get re-elected). And I also "learned" that Nixon knew nothing about Watergate, obstruction of justice isn't a real thing and FAKE NEWS persecuted him!!! From this point on I skimmed the last 80 pages because I was about to have a stroke. But I did "learn" that Reagan was brilliant, but just a little "forgetful," that Iran Contra was FAKE NEWS, and that Reagan's higher deficit was somehow superior to Carter's lower deficit, that women were doing SUPER GOOD in the 90's and were really getting more high-paid jobs than those silly statistics would show us, that the only good thing Clinton did was to rein in those Welfare Queens, that Brown v. Board of Education was judicial activism, that affirmative action was evil, that the Congressional Black Caucus was/is racist, that the term Hispanic is somehow offensive and that political correctness was/is literally as bad as the Salem Witch Trials and Communist blacklisting. Wow, just wow. So the worst thing about this book is that I am now questioning every single word I read before I got to that awesome Harding fellow. So I wasted probably 30 hours of my life to read propaganda when I could just turn on Fox News and get my fill a lot more quickly. Man, this guy would have LOVED Donald Trump.

Excellent! If you read just one book on American History, this should be the one. The book is loaded with factual information presented in a forthright and logical manner. The author truly has a gift for cutting through the underbrush and conveying information in an informative yet easy to understand manner. It’s a long book but a short read. I simply didn’t want to put it down!

An outsider's view of American History (British). Balanced and nuanced. Shows some sides of events that are not well known at all. Highly readable and engaging.

...are combined in the book by the Polymath Paul Johnson. Yes, it is long, but eminently readable and perfectly suited to an e reader. Mr. Johnson focuses on America's development, its religion, its expansion, and what constitutes an American character. A seamless narrative with elements of 'great man' and 'everyman' philosophy .....

In what is often considered his magnum opus, Paul Johnson crafts a grand narrative of the American people stretching some four an a half centuries. In it he seeks out the roots of American culture - or more accurately the American cultures which emerged and managed to simultaneously united and divide the nation. Johnson then charts the course of the nation's history, illuminating the evolution of those cultures and giving a period-by-period analysis of politics, technology, the arts, and notable social developments. He thus manages to give a broad, all-encompassing view of America over a very broad period; quite an ambitious work. Despite the book's length (1088 pages) it is highly readable and never delves too deep into details as to lose the reader; Johnson never lapses from the larger narrative of the book.

This interdisciplinary work about mushrooms is a stimulating antidote to a lot of conventional wisdom about economics. Matsutake grows opportunistically on the roots of pine trees -- it can't be cultivated, nor, despite demand, can production scaled up in a conventional way. To get more matsutake you need to create conditions for more pine trees -- but you also need to forage, and understand a lot else about the forest environment. Those who gather matsutake aren't alienated from their work: the book's ethnographic chapters expose the multitude of meanings the process can have for those who gather the mushrooms. Nor do the usual "laws" of supply and demand apply: in some communities there is pressure for the prices to be paid to gatherers to go upwards.I plan to use this book in a college course about sustainability for business majors: I'm looking forward to their grappling with these ideas so contrary to Econ 101. Unlike other reviewers I don't see any evidence that the author (ALT) misunderstands basic economics -- but their view shows how confusing it may be for some readers to have their orthodoxy challenged. That's exactly why I think it's a useful book. In addition, the book has many interesting passages in its own right. For example, before reading this book I didn't know that mushrooms like matsutake are beneficial to the trees on whose roots they grow -- I thought they were "just" parasites. The importance of matsutake to various Southeast Asian immigrant groups in the Pacific Northwest was also something I'd had no inkling of previously. The main weak point of the book is that it speaks in an overly general way about Japan. The assertion that matsutake serve as gifts in Japanese society is repeated often in the text (e.g., @8, 62, 124-126). The suggestion also seems to be that the matsutake have meaning to those who pick them (as illustrated in the book's ethnographic chapters, set mostly outside Japan); then are turned into commodities farther down in the chain of commerce by participants who are indifferent to the circumstances of the mushrooms' harvesting; and then, when presented as gifts by someone who simply bought them, are meant to take on a more personal meaning again. There are two problematic aspects of these claims: are matsutake really given as gifts? and if so, are they the same matsutake as described in the ethnographic chapters? It turns out the answers to these questions are: rarely, and no.It's not at all a common practice in Japan for matsutake to be presented as a gift by someone who bought it as a commodity. I currently live in Iwate Prefecture, a northeastern rural area that is the #2 domestic producer of matsutake; before that I lived for a number of years in a Tokyo neighborhood well-known for preserving old traditions (Kagurazaka, in Shinjuku-ku). In neither place did I ever observe matsutake being used as a gift, unless the giver had picked it himself or herself on the same day (not possible in Tokyo!). My wife, who was born in Iwate but who lived in many areas all over Japan while growing up, had also never heard of matsutake as gifts, and she pointed out that the harvest time of matsutake doesn't coincide with any gift-giving holiday. In Iwate, which produces the highest-quality matsutake, they are either consumed locally or sent to the top restaurants and inns in Tokyo and Kyoto. My family only buys them to eat them.I contacted ALT about this point, and she very graciously and forthrightly explained that she was most familiar with Kyoto, and that very possibly what she described applies mainly there. Among Japan's 47 prefectures, Kyoto is in 9th rank as a producer of matsutake -- but its output is only around 1% of Iwate's. So it's hardly representative. (BTW the book refers to Kyoto as "central" Japan, which is how it might appear to an outsider who looks at a map, but the Japanese name for the region, Kansai, clearly labels it as "west.") She also mentioned that some expat Japanese families send American matsutake back to relatives in the Kyushu region, though this doesn't relate to Japanese production. Nor is it necessarily anything special: we send Iwate cabbages, cucumbers, and negi (Japanese leeks) as well as matsutake to friends and family in Tokyo, simply because they're cheaper and fresher where we live.Even in Kyoto and possibly other locales, do gift-givers make presents of matsutake harvested in North American, Finnish and Chinese forests and exported to Japan? From the sequence of chapters and particularly the discussion of intermediate wholesalers in the chapter entitled "From Gifts to Commodities -- and Back" (Ch. 9), you might get the impression that they do, even though ALT doesn't say this explicitly. But that's not at all the case: by the time foreign matsutake arrive in Japan they're too dry to be suitable as gifts. Yet well over 95% of Japanese matsutake consumption is imports, which thanks to their dryness are also much cheaper than domestically-harvested ones. Unfortunately, the book omits to mention the main destination of those fungi: the processed foods industry. They're sometimes sold sliced in cans or other packaging, and freeze-dried matsutake rice mixes are a popular item, as are bowls of matsutake-flavored instant ramen. Again, ALT was gracious in acknowledging this point, and mentioned that a related discussion seems to have been cut from her manuscript during the editing process. One other somewhat nebulous suggestion in the text is that matsutake grow mainly in forests disturbed by aggressive logging or other human exploitation. That may be true in North America and in some parts of Kyoto, but not at all in Iwate, Nagano or other high-production areas. In those regions, matsutake are harvested from what ALT calls "peasant forests," namely mountain forests that have been subject to a certain amount of maintenance by humans, such as having their undergrowth and debris periodically thinned, an activity known in Japan as satoyama. Although they are mentioned in the book, these forests are much less salient in the narrative than are the "capitalist ruins" of the book's subtitle. While I very much appreciated ALT's kind and forthcoming responses to my questions, the book's lack of accuracy or clarity on these points does somewhat blunt its most pointed and ironic commentary on capitalism, to the extent that commentary is meant to apply to Japan. But there is still plenty of value in the book. ALT's ironies are still justified by the ethnographic chapters, and the chapters that talk more about mushroom biology also get one to think critically about industrialized agriculture, with its emphasis on monoculture. All in all, a very imaginative approach to real-life economics, and one that pulls the rug, or forest floor, out from under some usual textbook concepts.

Many of us who study human/plant relationships have been waiting eagerly for this book, and I at least am not disappointed. Anna Tsing is a fine writer, a superb ethnographer, and an insightful and original thinker, and this long and detailed book shows off her skills perfectly. It's a worldwide survey of gathering, trading, and selling matsutake mushrooms, the gourmet mushrooms that currently run over $50 a pound in markets. They are prestigious in Japan, and necessary or nearly so for high-end gifts, and the world has caught on. The most interesting ethnography herein is of the matsutake pickers in Oregon--a mixed lot of southeast Asian hill people, Latin American migrants, and Anglo-Americans who want to live far out in the woods--many of them Vietnam vets. Tsing takes us also to Japan, Finland, and Yunnan (southwest China). In addition to the ethnography, Tsing is thoroughly grounded in the science of mushrooms. In dramatic contrast to those political ecologists and critical thinkers who make it a point of pride not to know any science, Tsing not only knows it but is sharply insightful into what really matters, and shows her usual skill at telling the reader. She starts with basics but goes into some real detail, e.g. on matsutake taxonomy. The take-home messages of the book include a focus on assemblages--transient or long-term linkages of people, environments, plants, and policies--and on ruined landscapes. In Oregon, matsutakes grow in overcut, undermanaged conifer land that went to lodgepole pine (on whose roots they grow as symbionts). In Japan, similar mismanagement long ago led to matsutake forests, but now those forests are what is wanted, and management is trying to restore them from overgrowth. In China, mismanagement is threatening forests in general. But from the ruins come new assemblages, which will support new lifeways. All this comes at the end of capitalist expansion and "progress," if not of the whole world. The book is something of a breathless speed-travel, but you can find full details about much of the stories in her other writings, and especially in articles and forthcoming works by her collaborators, especially Michael Hathaway. My main complaint is about the startoff. The very first page (vii) tells the old story about western philosophy seeing Nature as just a mechanical, passive backdrop, and says "The time has come for new ways of telling true stories beyond civilizational first principles" of that sort. This is mildly annoying to those of us who have been doing exactly that for 50 years. It rather elides the whole tradition from Thoreau and Emerson through Burroughs and Muir and Leopold and down to Bill McKibben and Gary Snyder. The arrogant nature-as-stuff-to-waste paradigm created its own backlash long ago.A minor point. More important is that capitalism and socialism may both come to an end as resources run out, so Tsing's book is timely and valuable; more to the point, it will be a classic.

A beautifully written, smart, absorbing book that is also profoundly moving

This book is really thought provoking. Anna is careful and generous, and she touches on subjects in a way that is wholly descriptive (vs prescriptive condemnation or celebration of any particular practice). I learned a lot and would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

Tsing attempts to create a philosophical platform to rationalize current environmental issues all from the perspective of matsutake hunting. An interesting approach that falls short in all aspects and fails to leave a lasting impact due to overly complicated philosophical metaphors and difficult to understand writing.

A beautiful and successful blending of science and philosophy. The dialectic at work in the hidden commons that evade privatization.

Review

"Chariots of the Gods is a pivotal book, first published at an important point in human consciousness and awareness, a time when minds were opening. That book changed many's and my own worldview. Erich von Däniken has again touched the pulse of humanity at another crucial moment, in discussing the now known 'fact' that The Gods Never Left Us." --Colin Andrews, author of On the Edge of Reality"Erich's newest book is a fascination journey from the ancient past into the present with a plethora of scientific evidence and documented research. As always, he ads his own "to the point" take on it all. Readers may also like that his newest work moves in a slightly different direction from his past books. A thoroughly enlightening and enjoyable Read." --Bruce Cunningham, Director, Ancient Mysteries International LLC & Publisher of Advanced Archaeology Review magazine

This book by Erich von Daniken was kind of short but good, I read it in lessthen 6 hours. The book makes me now want to read Zacharia Sitchins ,The Earth Chronicles.Having read the 12th planet I better get busy reading.darver10

Short and lacking any new data or ideas. I didn’t learn anything new and this book wasn’t very thought provoking. If you read Chariots of the Gods, you’re good.

This is a translation of Erich von Daeniken's 2016 book Botschaften aus dem Jahr 2118 (Messages from the year 2118). While von Daeniken's works are always worth reading, I found this one a little slower and lacking in the photos his books usually contain. The German title was a little misleading as it only covers the first and last chapters. Also, I thought this would be a translation of his 1985 book Habe Ich Mich Geirrt (Did I Get it Wrong) as that one was also said to be a continuation of Chariots of the Gods. Fortunately, a brief snippet of the 1985 book is in this one and nice to see it translated. Hopefully, the whole of that book will be translated as well someday. Still, it is well worth a read and can't wait for his next book!

New interpretations of mythology and folk legends. Stream of consciousness writing makes it hard to follow. Maps would help with locating the events.

Very well written by the author of "Chariots of the Gods" and easy read!!

Another great book from Von Daniken.

If you are open minded and know we cannot be the only intelligent beings in this universe then this a great read!!!

Did not purchase this, it was a birthday present. While I agree these are great, it does have flaws. Designs are beautiful and very detailed and take up the entire page. I was given the all mandala called meditation do I don't know what the other two in the series are like. What I don't care for is what people have mentioned, they scratch VERY easily so be cautious or you will be finding yourself redesigning. It is also impossible with the scratch tool to get it to look like the cover of the book.Like scratching off a lotto ticket you get crumbs, those crumbs in turn stick to the tool. Unless after every stroke you brush off and clean off the tip your lines are not solid. Not certain what you would use if the tool breaks. The meditation one is supposed to have a relaxing smell, makes me nauseous so I can't work on it long.Impossible to get straight lines unless you have robot type hands and some of them are so small you just make up your own.I would give thus consideration nonetheless since it is very different. This is NOT like your average adult coloring book. If you think you can finish a design in one night or even two, think again. This requires much more concentration than regular books and due to the detailed it can get tiresome. One took me three nights since there is no margin for error. You will also find that the colors are beautifully blended so in many spots it looks similar to a painted watercolor blending.

I really like this scratch off, reverse coloring, book. It's fun and relaxing to sit with it and progressively remove the gray and reveal the color. I find that activities like this really help lessen my stress & anxiety. It's a challenge as well as being flexible and forgiving. There are tissue paper sheets in between each page but a few light scratches were on mine too as other reviewers have said. It doesn't bother me though. I feel it'll work itself out while I'm working on the few with random scratches. Plus I had very few pages that happened to get scratches.Like others have stated a metal tool is better. The wood tool included is not only uncomfortable to hold, it catches and doesn't make the line as smooth. I plan on buying as many scratch off books as I can so I'm going to buy a few different metal tools on Amazon and see which I like. Happy scratching!

This is a fun to do product, but mine arrived scuffed. This wasn't the fault of the seller--it was a manufacturing issue that caused each page to haves some of the black coating rubbed off from each of the pages. There is a faint smell that comes with any scratch off paper, but it dissipates as you use it.Still, it's a relaxing book, and it's fun to see the mandalas' colors come into fruition as you scratch off the pattern. If you want a relaxing alternative to doodling or coloring, this one's pretty enjoyable and mindless. I don't intend to be framing these, so the flaws, while annoying, aren't relaxation-prohibitive.

updated review: i LOVE the wooden scraper. i discovered this after i bought an etch book with an actual metal scraper. at least the tip on this can be sharpened when needed by using the poor man's pencil sharpener technique. the metal scaper? not so much.the one thing i do not like about it (which is why i still haven't given it 5 stars) is that some of the photos have so much detail and small spaces between them that the detail gets lost amidst the color. i found myself keeping some of the gray areas intact just to have definition and contrast to some of the pictures. aside from that, this was a great meditative experience. (and i still stick with my one pass line routing. life is made so much easier than actually trying to scrape. trust me)original review:let's set the record straight: i love this etch art book. for the money, it is perfect--tons of hours piddling away, scraping, distracting the mind. that being said, the tool they give you to scrape such a large book is actually kind of offensive. one would think that with so many pads to etch, they would include a metal scraper with it. instead, they give you a wooden long handled "toothpick."pro tips:1. buy a metal etcher. it will make your life easier.don't want to do that? then consider the following:a. learn to sharpen your wooden tool (please, for the love of god, DOT NOT use a pencil sharpener). simply scrub it against the cardboard surface in the back of the book while rolling it around. that will sharpen the point. FYI--you will have to do that about a third of the way thru the first etch.b. try the "tattoo" technique of using one pass lines to get the foil off. once i stopped "etching," i realized this was actually quite effective, especially on the etch boards with muted details.

Love this! All the pictures are so detailed, I know it will take me quite a while to get through them all. The only complaint I have with this is the provided wooden pencil they give you. It feels so cheap and flimsy, and it really hurts my hands when I use it for too long. This isn't too big of a deal, because you can buy better ones, but for someone that doesn't have other ones, this could quickly become a pain.

Seriously, the one on the cover is one of the included scratch patterns (I think mine had a different color underneath) but they are all so pretty! I was worried there would be one good one and the rest would be subpar, but I have never been happier to be proven wrong. I'm so excited to sit down at my desk with these to wind down for the day. I am especially impressed with this book because the pages are coated in an almost clayboard-like finish and unlike the other two books I ordered the black layer doesn't begin to peel up in large chunks after a while. If you like adult coloring, I highly recommend giving this a try! One tip: use a pencil sharpener or some sandpaper to sharpen the wooden scratcher that comes with it. This will make the fine detail work much easier!

I've been following Alois for a little while as a style blogger, and have really enjoyed her "French style with a colorful twist" approach. Alois really knows her stuff! In this delightfully illustrated book, she offers insight gleaned from years of fashion school, professional shopping, and style blogging. I find her tips about proportion and how to work with your own particular height/shape/coloring and perceived flaws extremely helpful - to understand the "why" instead of just being told "do this" or "do that." She breaks down the strategic use of color in a particularly effective way as well. I actually plan to re-read this book, and probably buy a few more copies for my sister and friends.

This is a must-have book for every woman who cares about fashion, style and all things Parisian. I absolutely adored "Dress Like a Parisian" and learned so much about how to develop my own unique style, how to add artful details to a look, chose quality basics and how to mix up high and low fashion. The illustrations are fabulous and Alois Guinut is a wonderful writer--funny, conversational and incredibly insightful and knowledgeable. I will keep my copy on my Francophile bookshelf and buy lots more copies as gifts. I highly recommend "Dress Like a Parisian"!

I am absolutely thrilled with this book. After reading Paris street Style, I was hooked on the subject but wanted more pictures and advice than just wordy descriptions and glowing accolades. This book certainly delivers with numerous photos, details, and particular applications of pattern, color, fit, etc.. I’ve read it several times since and plan keep it for sometime.

The book's content is fantastic, hugely informative, lots of tips, how to's and styling ideas - I'm loving it so far, but it's really really rubbish reading it on a Kindle which is why I only rated it four stars. Three would be too low and five too high for the Kindle experience. You can't make the font bigger - the only way to read it is to enlarge the full page as one would a photo or image so that the font is legible and then once you've got it right, scroll up and down and sideways to read it. If you forget which way you were moving - or go too far - you end up on the previous or next page. Most frustrating!!!!! I'm ploughing through it though because I really do want to read it - am only halfway through the Prints chapter and have learned so much already. Just wish I could highlight and make notes ... that text is fixed for good!

I had wanted to like this--but I found it lacking. Not enough information provided. I will continue to cherish my copy of FRENCH CHIC by Susan Sommers.

Loved the book! Good information, nice number of photos, and interviews. Great find for a Francophile! Need it in Kindle format to take on the road or shopping please! Kindle edition please!

I used to work in a French gift shop (in America) and we sold many different books about French style. Most are interesting and fun. But none are as thorough and enlightening as “Dress Like a Parisian.” This book goes way beyond “le look” and delves into the subtleties and essential understandings of shapes, fabrics, colors, hair, style, makeup and more. It is clear that the author has a lot of experience in styling and fashion. The information is directly applied to Paris style, but the fundamentals she covers could be used to creat many other styles . In fact, this book is really all about “me”...by giving me the knowledge and encouragement to create own my unique style. I will refer to it often!

This book is a must for anyone wanting timeless fashion and style advice. It's like having the author at your side helping you make the right decisions. The format is clear and the presentation excellent. It gives me the confidence to make the right style decisions.
