Finally a language book that teaches practical vocabulary that isn't always found in the textbooks.With large comic book style pages, vocabulary items are depicted in a color drawing that covers most of the page. On the page borders are small individual depictions of the vocabulary items with the name beneath it in Russian, there are no English translations (except in the glossary) because none are ever needed.For example; the first page shows a color drawing of various rooms in a house. One room is the bath. The border of the page will have a picture of a toilet and its name beneath in Russian, then it is shown in the context of the bathroom without a label so the reader can self quiz.An excellent resource!, good for beginner to intermediate level readers.

Our Russian teacher was super excited about this book, so it must be good. The drawings are a little dated, but it has all sorts of practical words in Russian AND with the rough English spelling of how to pronounce them. We also got "My First Russian Phrases," which is also good (and has better illustrations).

I love this book. It helps me learn Russian words and gives the pronunciation. It is a great visual way to build vocabulary in Russian but it does not include any grammar.

As a beginning student of Russian I thought this book might be a good vocabulary builder, and for the most part that is true. The illustrations aren't always sufficient to identify the word depicted, but there is an English translation in the back so that's only a minor annoyance. Another minor annoyance is that words are given in either singular or plural form, whereas it would have been nice if both were included.However, I found two major shortcomings relating to pronunciation. One that has been mentioned in the other reviews is the lack of anything indicating stress, which could easily have been done with either accent marks on the word itself or by capitalizing the accented syllable in the phonetic rendering (PEESma).The other major shortcoming is that certain vagaries of pronunciation aren't taken into account, such as the devoicing of a consonant at the end of a word (e.g. the word for iron would be more correctly rendered as "ootyook" rather than "ootyoog") and the assimilation of consonants when they occur together ("foodbol" rather than "footbol").I still would recommend this book but I also recommend getting a good dictionary that shows word stress and making sure you learn the rules of pronunciation and take them into account.

This book is about the 1990's in Eastern Europe, especially in the Balkans. It seems slightly outdated, but it is so well written that it definitely kept me going. It reads very fast. The book gets better and better as you go on. Some of the very pessimistic prophecies of the author were wrong, but many of her observations and thoughts seem to be very accurate and straight to the point. The relationship with her own country is very troubled and most of the Non-Croat readers, without any deeper insight into regional politics, will not be able to fully understand her point of view. Whether she is right or wrong, she always writes well. Most of the time she is very pessimistic. The book is actually completely soaked in sadness. There is in it no sign of excitement about freedom, democracy or free market economy...Instead, there is a strong conviction that the peoples of Eastern Europe are not mature enough to benefit from and build on any of these. I personally don't agree; the results of the systemic changes in the region have been mixed, with some extremely successful and some extremely disappointing and troubling cases. In fact, the 1990's were the last decade when the region could be still discussed as one item. Today, these are all very different countries.

Drakulic delivers another series of short essays, in the style of her earlier "How We Survived Communism". In "Café Europa", the reader is carried from Croatia across western Europe during the few short years since Croatia emerged from war as an independent state, caught somewhere between its Balkan history and its European ambitions. She ruminates on subjects as far afield as her distaste for the word "we" because of its communist overtones, which leads to the verdict that the western concept of "I", of self-reliance and modernity in a civil state, is a notion still to be embraced in eastern Europe. It is for precisely the same reason that she admires Americans their fetish for perfect teeth, because they represent self-respect and independence from shoddy state-sponsored dental care.Many of the essays in the book deal with the peculiar talent in eastern Europe for hiding and forgetting the past, thereby evading responsibility and missing the opportunity to learn from it. This flair for forgetfulness causes Drakulic's mother to fear for the sanctity of her husband's grave, marked by a communist star vulnerable to those who would destroy symbols of forty years of communism. It is this same talent that allows fascist "Ustasha" symbols from the 1940s to be revived in the 1990s under the guise of nationalism. The same phenomenon that impels each generation of politicians to rename streets and plazas in order to avoid any public recognition of historical figures whose views place them, at least temporarily, on the wrong side of today's political fences. It is this same failure of history that forces a Croatian journalist to mince words and ask facile questions during an exclusive interview with Dinko Sakic, the notorious concentration camp commander.Drakulic is a bit exasperated when, on a visit to Israel, she is barraged with questions about Croatia's fascist role during World War II. "To grow up under communism means to live forever in the present. Once the final social order had been established, there was no need to look backwards - or forwards, for that matter.... Perhaps this is the reason why we are now, with this recent war, sentenced to live in the past. Sometimes I ask myself whether this is the punishment for our lack of interest in history, for our fear, silence and irresponsibility towards ourselves. For our ingnorance." She realizes that Croatia as a society has failed to examine and integrate the lessons of its fascist period, and this failure, this willful forgetfulness, is itself a type of evil complicity perpetually spawning new crises, including the high-tension ethnic conflicts that yielded the 1991-1995 wars.The only jarring note is the essay titled "Why I Never Visited Moscow", in which Drakulic bemoans the fact that she has been categorized as an eastern European writer. This seems a bit hypocritical given that all of "Café Europa" including the very cover blurbs, much like her previous books, is premised on the fact that she is a particularly talented eastern European writer and astute social critic who has interesting and insightful things to say about the region. Perhaps Drakulic, who has won awards, fame, and money with her admirable accounts of eastern Europe, is being a bit self-righteous when she complains about being viewed as an eastern European writer.

This is a good book, and one worth reading. It's not a history book nor a work of political philosophy. The analysis isn't rigrously done. I don't say these things as criticisms, but rather to point out what sort of book it is. It's a book of essays that provide a particular picture of what life was like in the early 90's in post-communist Eastern and Central Europe. Many times these pictures are insightful and can help throw light on a situaiton. They can help provide that "ah-ha!" moment that is sometimes lacking from a more historical or analytic account. So, it fills a good roll that way, but you should not expect it to be something it's not. My only other criticism is that sometimes it got a bit too close to the "why are we eastern europeans so dumb?" mode for my taste. But, it's an enjoyable book that would be useful for anyone with an interest in post-communist eastern europe. For those who want a deeper view of how Eastern Europe got to be how it was when the Soviet Union fell, I'd recommend reading this book together with parts of Alec Nove's terrific _The Economics of Feasible Socialism_.

This book may be a nineties look at how things will turn out in Europe, so some may say it's out of date, but its perspective on history makes it that much more valid. Drakulic's experience doesn't change, what happened to the East doesn't change. This book is a brilliant, detail-oriented look at how Europe was before and after the Soviet Union, and I want to read everything else she's written. Love it.

Slavenka Drakulic is both a skilled writer and a capable interpreter of the human condition. Cafe Europa is not a standard history text; rather it is a collection of related articles that reveal the attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors of individuals who have lived in both the communist world as well as the post-communist period. Drakulic is a great travel companion with a keen feel for the people that she writes about. I approached the book expecting a useful social commentary and found it to be both enlightening and difficult to put down. Anyone who wants to truly understand this part of the world needs to read this one!

Excellent book, Slavenka Drakulic is very perceptive and understands Balkan mentality better than anybody. I really enjoyed reading this book, and other books from Drakulic as well. Sometimes, it seems like Drakulic is balancing between two worlds-one of reality and the other of fantasy. Very good reading and it will give you an insight into the minds of people living in parts of Southeast Europe.

I never could get into Sudoku but it recently clicked and got an app for my iPad but am trying to limit screen time so bought this book. (an aside: app vs. writing, each has their positives and negatives)I was looking for something compact and small to throw in my work bag/keep on nightstand and this fits the bill, the binder rings are a little big, maybe they could be smaller, I don't know? Not really that big of a deal though. A nice addition would be a little ribbon to mark the spot you're at or mark the answers page of the puzzle you're on but that's easy enough to DIY.More about Sudoku...it calms my mind and really helps me relax at night which often leads to better sleep. I guess it's a lot like reading in that it feels like a lesser form of meditation. They say the brain is a muscle that needs to be worked like any other muscle in your body. If don't feel mentally challenged enough in daily life (routine) or need a challenging distraction, working any type of puzzle can help. The end.

I love Sudoku but hadn't played it for years and was out of practice. I found the first few puzzles to be challenging....enough so that I thought "If #5 is so hard, what will #195 be like???" I don't have the answer to that yet because I'm still in the "easy" section. I am pleased that my skills have sharpened and that I'm able to complete each puzzle with out looking at the answers. I feel like playing Sudoku is a good thing I can do for my aging brain.

Boy, I wish I had paid more attention to the few negative reviews. This is a nice book, and I like the spiral, but it is VERY small. Plus, the numbers are in color, and not bold. The population is aging!!! At least I am. I would never have purchased this if I had realized how tiny it was. I'm going to look for something else. I'll keep it for some time I'm desperate.

This is a wonderful book for beginners and those who are gradually beginning to do increasingly more involved Su Doku puzzles. I got fabulous instructions and strategies from the Su Doku for Dummies but this is the best for moving on from there and then getting back to the puzzles in the Dummies book.

After doing a couple puzzles, it seems like the easy ones are pretty simple with very few little numbers required but not so easy that you can solve it all in one swoop. The book is smaller than I expected - it is about 4x6 inches (roughly), which means the puzzle area is not very big. I am used to puzzles being bigger allowing for comfortable writing of little numbers. Paper quality is good and doesn't tear easily.

The perfect thing about this book is that the puzzles get progressively harder so you can work on improving your Sodoku skills! Plus if you get stumped or need a hint the answers are in the back. Perfect size for travel.

This is a great book! It has a space for beginners and novies in the middle and chanllenging ones in the back. I love that its small. it's easy to tuck in your purse / carry with you. The spiral binding makes a world of a difference because I can just flip the sheet over and not try to have to hold down the crease or deal with multiple puzzles on one page. Worth your money If you're looking for a good sudoku book!

You know when you see a book for sale online, and it's from an artist you love, and you order it blind only to realize that the book has few illustrations and the ones that are included suffer from bad lighting and low quality reproduction?This is not that book.This is an absolutely beautiful book, completely filled with color photographs on high-quality, glossy paper. She includes many inspiring projects for you to try, with instruction on using watercolor, collage, ink, etcetera. I've decided to start doing letter-writing/journaling programs at my local library, and am eager to try some of these ideas with others in my community.

The author is an artist/illustrator who does a fabulous job of sharing her inspiration and techniques in this book. Rather than teaching specific projects, Geninne demonstrates her process for creating nature-inspired art using ink, watercolor, and collage with well-written text and beautiful photos.There are 32 pages of collage papers included. So many ideas for any artist here, from beginner to advanced. As an aside, I look for reviews written by folks who have actually read the book and avoid making assumptions about the author’s use of materials.

Like another reviewer, as shown in my photo, I stopped at the porch swing and tore open my Amazon package as soon as I received it, knowing this book was inside. Geninne’s book is visually beautiful and I love hearing her share about her history and journey as an artist. Her narrative is also full of little tips like really noticing your surroundings and taking up close photos of things that interest you. I also bought some white acrylic ink to use in detailing my watercolors as she has used. I’m savoring this book and taking it slow...I don’t want it to end! Especially if you love birds and plants, this may be one for you to check out for sure !

Quirky, creative, packed with information and ideas....I loved this book and heartily recommend it to artists and want-to-be artists. While some artists are tight-fisted about techniques and special tools, Geninne isn't that way at all. Both open-hearted and open-handed, she shares everything and realizes that nobody can be Geninne, and nobody can copy a style completely rare and untque to the author.Also, the back of the book has about 32 pages of usable papers for collage projects, etc. I've read and reread the text and almost feel like she is a close friend. Her filters are down and she shares readily and in an almost childlike way.I highly recommend this book to artists, teachers, dreamers. Hurrah for this artist.

A visually beautiful book. Instructions are easy to follow with accompanying pictures. I am so in love with the collage papers!!! My only grouse is that the collage papers are printed back and front...now I have the most difficult task of choosing which side to use!!! This is a book that will make you happy and itch to start creating.

This is a delicious book. I love the details in this book on how to choose the right paints, inks, brushes, paper,etc to get a project to look more satisfying in the end. I also like the detailed photos of the step-by-step process Geninne goes through when she makes her artwork. The color is great and the writing is very good. I totally recommend this book.

If you like birds, nature, drawing, painting, collage, ink or just looking at gorgeous photography you will love this book. I was very pleasantly surprised at the amount of content and great instruction. Definitely worth purchasing. You will not be disappointed.

This book is amazing. I love all of the projects and Geninne's explanations of the projects are super helpful. I bought one for me and one for a friend.

About the Author

P. D. Eastman was an author-illustrator who created many children’s books, including Are You My Mother?, Go, Dog. Go!, and The Best Nest. After buying quite a few books for my toddler, a friend recommended "Go, Dog! Go!" It was an immediate hit for my 2YO. Since then I have been interested to see what the other PD Eastman creations would be like. This past month I ordered three, including this one. And as I hoped- my son loves them! He can actually turn the pages and identify with the images and I know for sure that he feels a sense of accomplishment when I commend him for "getting it right". His face lights up with excitement as he turns the pages and tells me what Ted and Fred are doing.I would definitely recommend this as an addition to any Toddler's bookshelf. Also consider:Are you my mother?I'll teach my dog 100 wordsGo, Dog! Go!

My kids LOVE the 2 "big dog" books, especially this one, the original. It is cute, funny, and a book of total opposites. The kids are thoroughly entertained over and over again, especially when the friends drive their cars opposite--the kids roar every time at the fast car leaving his friend in the dust. Bonus, I find these cute dogs fun also, and the words are rhythmic and easy to read, so I look forward to reading it again when they ask, instead of cringing! The illustrations hold attention, too. They are colorful and cute--these dogs are irresistible!! There is a "little" book edition which is nice, also, but condensed. This original version cannot be improved on--this is the one you'll want!

Got this book for my 3 year old grandaughter. Used to read a now lost copy to her dad when he was that age. Great story, simple, memorable. I guess my only comment is about how it was damaged slightly in shipping. Really should put a cardboard protector around the tnis thin paperback book to prevent bent/creased damage.

My 2 year old loves this book so much that he has it memorized! I love that it is a board book that introduce a few opposites (big/little, wet/dry, fast/slow, upstairs/downstairs) and it is a pretty small size so easy to take in the car or in his backpack to grandmas.

My 1 1/2 year old likes this book but at the end it's a little too wordy for him to really understand. One example is..."Goodnight Ted. Sleep well,said Fred""Goodnight Fred. Sleep well, said Ted."

This was my 31 year old son's favorite book as a child. Now he has a baby daughter, so I was happy to find it now available in a board book for her.

Another PD Eastman Classic. Kids live the fun text and illustrations.

I'm thirty years old and I've been searching for this book for 12 years. For the longest time, I thought it was called "Fred and Ted Are Friends". Thank goodness for Amazon's search-inside-the-book feature!!The book is about two dogs (Fred and Ted) who live together and learn the meaning of communication and cooperation. I love this book because it reminds me of being at my grandma's house. If you've got kids, I'd recommend picking this up for them too to enjoy and treasure.Just don't get rid of it when they get too old, because they'rgoing to want it again around the time they turn 25.

I'm new to packrafting and this book is as essential for me as my new paddle. This book covers the basics, but it also covers topics I will always use no matter what my skill level is, i.e. packing lists and trip ideas. It's also is full of beautiful colored photos- tons of them- almost every page! It's great for getting a dreamer dreaming of adventures! I would love to see a follow up book with each chapter as a trip. I have a feeling the author has had many great trips to write about. I would recommend this to anyone who packrafts! I attached a few photos of our packraft trip in SE Alaska, out to the Patterson Glacier. Wish I had read this book before the trip, it would have gone a lot smoother.And unlike the previous review, i'm not married to the author (lol), in fact I've never hear of Molly Absolon (no offense). But I hope to meet you out packrafting someday :)

Glad to see more books on this sport. The boats open whole worlds of opportunity. This is a good basic intro that will be helpful for beginners. I found the chapter on river reading pretty helpful even though I’m 5 years into the sport. Wish I would have had it at the start. You could find most of what’s covered in here with lots of web searching (well, if you knew what to look for), but this puts it all in place and hits it all, with lots of good pictures. Well done.

I love this book. Great tips, excellent information to get you started in a new sport. The photos are absolutely fantastic as well. So glad I am married to the author, but I know you'll love the book as well, even if you aren't as biased as me.

The pull-back design is the best of the Usborne track books. I use this train on another Usborne book delivered with a wind-up version (which only disappoints). The only negative to the Busy Train book (vs. other Usborne track books) is that this design leaves the tracks stranded in the book. Some versions include the ability to pop track pages out and assemble them as a large single map of tracks. This isn't necessarily a drawback (especially if your intent is to contain the play area within the book, though that's still an option in the aforementioned alternative style). I would recommend that you consider the slot together track books for their track versatility but steer clear of the wind-up accessory unless you have a very conscientious (and patient) operator. At the same time, books like this one (where tracks are fixed within the book) are still plenty of good (if more restrictive) fun.

This book is just a joy! The little train speeds around the book's pages and is delightful. At one year of age, our grand daughter just wanted to use the car. But at 2 years of age, she delights in the train zooming through the panorama of the pages. However, again, she is more interested in grabbing the train off the tracks before it finishes it's trip. The book is of thick board stock and will last through up through this 3rd year, where I believe she will enjoy the page's journey past all the attraction. Love this book.s

Super cute. My grandson loves it and it works well. Make sure it's put up when you are done, the train is small and could easily get lost. I saved the clear plastic cover for it, to store the train with the book when done. Might buy anoth book in this series. The Pull-Back is better than the Wind-up for little children, much easier to use.

I bought this for my granddaughter (3 yrs old) to take on a plane trip to Hawaii which is about 5 hours long. It kept her entertained for loan periods at a time which is sometimes difficult for toddlers. Also side note, she is now in love with trains! Highly recommend.

This book is awesome. My four-year-old grandson who is obsessed with trains loves this book It is a very high-quality book and brings him a lot of pleasure running the train on its track. Usborne books never disappoint.

Its easy to use by my two year old. The illustrations are well done and delightful. He geys a lot of pleasure just from spotting things in the pictures and naming them. Without the pull back helicopter the book wouldnt be nearly as much fun and theres no secure place in the book for it. I keep the helicopter on the top shelf of the bookcase so we're always ready to play.

My grandson is crazy about trains and he LOVES this book. Got it for his 2nd birthday. Needs help getting it pulled back and onto tracks,however.

my son loves it... the book fell apart though and I had to tape it, but still it is a great idea and worth the money for the amount of fun my son got. His favorite book

After seeing / hearing the author on TV, I had high hopes for this book. Just maybe I could get some ideas to help with estate problems /living together agreements for the older generation. which are certainly different from a couple starting out in their 20s. Instead, Love & Money seemsto be a "paid political announcement" to drum up business for lawyers. It is geared to young people by suggesting they make a pre-nup, post-nup, living together agreement or whatever to outline everything they want in a perfect life; Everything from weight management to dealing with pet peeves to spending habits. Sorry, but I don't think life works that way in most instances.The first half makes some good points for having an estate plan, but all (supposedly) need to be handled by an attorney. The second half is pure fluff and gibberish talking about internal roadblocks to wealth such as nutrition and stress.(in my opinion) most of the authors ideas on estate planning can be given a bit of credence, but not everyone can or will want to run to their nearby attorney and fork over thousands for a trust or love contract. And, the author, as an attorney, gives no help to keep matters in your own hands.

I enjoyed this book very much. Ann-Margaret made this book an easy read for just about everyone. I think were this book succeeds is in the fact that it makes you realize that making and saving money is not the end of the story. Its about preserving our hard earned wealth for ourselves and our family. In a moment our wealth can be wiped out by a lengthy nursing home stays or a costly divorce. This book makes you think about things that we either did not know about or did not want to know about. Such things like pre and post nuptial agreements, wills, trusts, etc. This book will help us to prepare whatever legal documents that will serve us the best. For these and other reasons I give it a 5 star rating and encourage everyone to get a copy. Ann-Margaret made this book not only informative but a fun read. She tells of experiences that happened that we call can relate to.

Excellent book for a married couple or anyone contemplating marriage. It's clearly written, articulate and an easy read about issues we can be unwilling to face. It was so good that I actually bought a second book to give to a friend in divorce proceedings so that she will be able to avoid potential missteps in a future relationship.

Excellent reading and information for adults who are married or have elderly parents. Great advice on how to keep your hard earned money.

This book was recommended to me by a close friend who knew I was considering certain familial financial moves. He had used the author in her capacity as an attorney for some estate work in his own family, and was very impressed with her expertise and grasp of elder law, which can be quite confusing. Not only did the book have the answers to my financial concerns, but it covered the material very comprehensively. The author helps the reader resolve financial dilemmas through on-point examples and short vignettes based upon situations she's encountered with past clients, and covers an incredible amount of relationship-related issues that, all too often, revolve around money. This book is more than worth the price!

Get while your kids are young to teach them to value money and work hard for it and not expect it. First half is about your kiddos the second half is protecting yourself

"Autumn of Glory", by Thomas Connelly. This is the second volume of Connelly's two-volume treatise on the Confederate Army of Tennessee and covers from late 1862 to the end of the Civil War. It is primarily an extensively researched examination of the Confederate high command in the West including Jeff Davis and the assorted members of his "War Cabinet". This volume picks up with the War in progress and is about twice the length of the first volume ("The Army of Tennessee"). Readers who enjoy watching soap operas with their myriad convolutions of plots, intrigues, small dramas and story line twists will enjoy this book. The overall picture this presents is that the South defeated itself with its' internal politics and incompetence. HOWEVER... Connelly is something of a "myth-buster" and makes many very credible assertions that seem to debunk a host of the long-held ideas about the Confederates and the Civil War in general. That alone makes this an interesting read. Also very much to his credit, it's clear that he is trying hard to be as fair as he can. Connelly also provides plenty of analyses of characters, situations and events and, of course, such analyses are always subjective to no small degree. Thus the reader can have the additional fun of debating Connelly's sometimes gratuitous or contradictory positions. HOWEVER... Readers are again alerted that Connelly (in this volume) drives some of his points into the ground several dozen times more than necessary and on a few occasions repeats entire passages almost verbatim for no particularly obvious reason. I suspect this 540-page volume could have been presented just as well with 50 fewer pages.

Read this book years ago and decided to reread. Perfect study of the Confederate army in the west.

I highly recommend Connelly’s two-volume history of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Tackling the entire thing is not for the faint at heart: Volume I (which covers the period from the start of the war and the army’s organization through Perryville in the fall of 1862) is 280 pages long, while Volume II (Murfreesboro through the war’s end) is 536 pages, for a grand total of 816. Moreover, Connelly is deeply focused on the big-picture questions of why the Army failed in its task of defending the West. Many Civil War buffs would probably find his battle descriptions too sparse to be satisfying: he deals with Perryville, Franklin, and Bentonville in three pages each, for example. You thus do not get lots of descriptions of what battles were like for the individual soldier, or accounts of X Regiment’s move here while Y Brigade struck the Union line there. While succinct, however, I found his battle descriptions to be clear and compelling.But Connelly’s research (he was a history professor at the University of South Carolina) is impeccable; his treatment of the internal politics of the army’s high command, riven with personality conflicts, is revealing and convincing; and his writing is elegant and vivid, fit to be ranked with that of Bruce Catton or Shelby Foote. Here, for example, is his description of the Confederate assault at Franklin:“About 4 p.m., the signal came to advance. The columns lurched forward, displaying the last great spectacle of the war. In near-perfect formation, eighteen infantry brigades, banners flapping in the wind, moved across the open plain. Save for the sound of regimental bands and occasionally shouted orders, there was little noise except for the flurry of rabbits and quail escaping the steadily moving Confederates. Half a mile south of Franklin the columns halted and shifted into a formation of two battle lines. Then came the order to charge, and thousands of yelling Confederates moved forward.”Here is his description of the Army’s final march, after its surrender to Sherman, to Salisbury, North Carolina to demobilize:“To march to Salisbury was not easy. The small, solemn band carried many lingering memories. Who could forget the sound of Hardee’s regimental bans as his stubborn corps marched from the cedar thickets at Murfreesboro for one last dash against the angle . . . the peculiar roar of the autumn wind on the rolling hills at Perryville . . . the hoarse cheers in the gathering dusk at Chickamauga, when Longstreet’s and Polk’s wings reunited . . . the smartly dressed ranks in that last glimpse of a vanishing war at Franklin?“But there were bitter memories, too. They would not forget Zollicoffer lying dead in the fog and rain at Mill Springs . . . Sidney Johnston bleeding to death in the blooming Shiloh peach orchard . . . the sheer panic when Thomas’ men scampered atop Missionary Ridge . . . the senseless, bullish slaughter that hot July day at Ezra Church . . . the sharp ice and pelting snow on the barefoot march from Nashville.”
