The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Workbook

Review

"This gem of a workbook will be valuable to any professional interested in methods to maximize recovery and adjustment following acquired brain injury. The workbook is grounded in established theory and rehabilitation principles and is comprehensive in addressing the diversity of cognitive and psychological issues that commonly occur with brain injury. The content is well integrated and accessible to readers with varying levels of rehabilitation experience. Notable strengths of the book are the inclusion of chapters on mood and fatigue and the wealth of specific treatment activities--including handouts--that practitioners can easily implement and tailor to individual clients."--McKay Moore Sohlberg, PhD, CCC-SLP, Communication Disorders and Sciences Program, University of Oregon "A highly readable book that will engage the interests of a wide range of rehabilitation professionals. Each chapter thoughtfully echoes an underlying emphasis on holistic care, resulting in a unique contribution to the rehabilitation literature. Presented in the context of foundational scientific evidence, and integrating specific clinical guidance with worksheets and case illustrations, this book is immediately applicable to clinical care. It will be a go-to resource for rehabilitation clinicians."--Jennifer J. Vasterling, PhD, Chief of Psychology, VA Boston Healthcare System; Professor of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine "These pioneers and master practitioners of brain injury rehabilitation have produced an incredibly beneficial and practical workbook that will allow highly effective approaches to rehabilitation to become widely available across the globe. The science is excellent, the clinical practice state of the art, and the humane whole-person approach worthy of great admiration. There is nothing else like this--if you work with even one brain-injured person, you have to have this workbook.”--Ian H. Robertson, PhD, Global Brain Health Institute, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland "It is refreshing to find a book that addresses both theoretical and practical aspects of cognitive rehabilitation, including practical examples of the critical role that cognitive deficits play in everyday life. Particularly useful tools and strategies for compensating for deficits associated with specific brain functions are reinforced throughout the book. This is an excellent resource for everyone from students to seasoned therapists looking to expand their skills. It is especially pleasing that the book discusses vitally important factors--such as mood, identity, and fatigue--that are often overlooked in the rehabilitation process."--Susan K. Kime, OTR/L, occupational therapist in private practice, Phoenix, Arizona

I'm a school social worker at a juvenile detention center, and I commonly bring books (usually high quality YA Lit) for the kids to read when they are not in school. Many of our kids are not great students and few were readers before they came here, but many kids read for pleasure now. Last year alone, well over 30 kids read "The Hate U Give" and many were eagerly awaiting "On the Come Up." When I brought it to school last week, many of the kids' faces absolutely lit up, and they are now engrossed in the novel. When I arrived today, one of the kids told me he was done and asked for "another Angie Thomas book." I laughed and explained he's already read them, so I'd have to bring him something else.In any case, it is another fantastic, relatable book, especially for the kids I have here at the JDC. They can relate to the themes, characters, and experiences, as most have grown up in complicated family systems and in communities not dissimilar from Garden Heights. Thomas is a great writer, and with "On The Come Up," I think she captured the language (her characters sound like my kids--even more so than in THUG). Well done, and we'll be eagerly waiting her third novel.

I actually liked this book a lot better than The Hate You Give. The Hate You Give was an important book, but there were a lot of unnecessary scenes and even unnecessary characters. The pacing was slow at times, and the story seemed to drag on. I still liked that book, but it wasn't my favorite. This book shows the author's growth. The charactes are all gripping and there is not a dull moment. I read the book in two days. The message of the story will stick with you. This is definately worth the read and one I will probably return to in the near future.

Reading this young-adult novel, I realized that -- likely since I'm now much older and a bit more jaded -- I'm not as prone to simply assume (as did some characters in this story) that hip-hop incites violence. Granted, I'm not an ardent fan of that music genre. Yet I'm more willing to see it as poetry addressing social injustices and real-life inner turmoil. The story called to my mind how such lyrics may be disquieting to mindsets in the U.S. that are more suburban, conservative, and (if I may phrase it so) colonialist. Here, high-school student Bri's passion to perform is tested by the pressures of her deceased dad's rap legacy, as well as the music industry's own demands (along with its misogynistic attitudes), and Bri's own preparations for college entrance exams. As the story progresses, Bri's lyrics vent against campus racism. But will this result in her music being censored, and her being virtually labeled a hoodlum? More urgently, will a music career prove a ticket for her family to escape compounding financial hardships? While I more strongly favor the author's first novel, don't misunderstand -- this book, too, turned out enjoyable for me. The ending here may have seemed a bit ideal, but true to life, not all turned out rosy for everyone. I felt grateful to get acquainted with Bri's family and each of her closest peers. I grinned at some lyrical "sick burns" and I laughed seeing how gossip was prized at the church that Bri's family attended. I welcomed the implied ties to "The Hate U Give" and even a nod to a certain Becky Albertalli novel.

Fantastic. I’m not gushing, but it’s really, very good.Bri is, as she says, brilliant, and as a character, one of the most unique and complex I’ve ever read. She’s tough and vulnerable, talented and sensitive, yet hot-headed. I love her voice, and being taken on the ride of her confusion feels genuine and was so much fun.I love how Thomas doesn’t shy away from so many social lessons with this novel, more so than with THUG. Gun violence, racial stereotypes, welfare, systemic poverty, drug abuse, drug distribution, police brutality, and so much more are all discussed while also weaving in a bit of romance and the right amount of family drama. This is a fast-paced read and I really want Trey to be my big brother, too. I just felt like it wasn’t as tight as I’d like it to be, and the pacing was off at times. Minor issue. An incredible story. My kids will love it.

Fans of THUG can rest easy knowing that this one is no sophomore slump. I am curious about the audio book now because I just feel like the scenes with Bri's songs would be FABULOUS on audio. I loved how the story takes place in the same neighborhood as THUG because it felt so familiar going back into it. I appreciated Bri's struggle with figuring out who she is and the way Angie Thomas so brilliantly writes that struggle - of what people expect you to be and who you truly are. So so well done.

Angie has done it again! This book was incredible and captivating from the moment I opened it. She tackles her stories with so much heart and authenticity that her characters are more alive than some people I know in real life. One of my favorite things about her writing is how developed the adult characters are—and On the Come Up is no exception. I feel like YA usually doesn’t do parents or adults justice or craft them realistically. But each person no matter what age was just as developed and real as the main character. The voice is strong, the plot was mesmerizing—-everything about this book is a must read. Angie is the most talented author I’ve read in years!

Honestly, I wasn’t that blown away by this novel. It holds your interest but it’s simply not as good as THUG. My feelings may be due in part to the fact that I’m simply not a huge fan of hip hop. I also wasn’t so keen on all the profanity in the book especially for young readers. I wish rappers could get their point across without all the cussin smh. It would’ve also been nice to see Bri excel academically and actually take her education more seriously. We can be more than rappers.

(deep sigh) What didn't I like about the book? There is nothing better than reading a well written book. I loved every part of it. There are no negative parts. I loved Lady Elizabeth/Bess Byrd's character. She is like a phoenix, rising from the ashes to begin anew. Everyone in society turned their backs on her. Her father, Lord Thomas Byrd, eighth Baron Conway, and her ex-fiance Conner Garvey duplicitous and illegal actions, she felt shamed and disgraced. So, she withdrew from society. With the help of her dear friend, Irene Follett, she was able to pick up the pieces of her life and find a new purpose. Bess is brave to start over and brave to endure the degrading, disparaging remarks people would say behind her back and to her face. She is resilient and remarkable. Intelligent and kind. She gives back to the community her time and love by way of a children's food kitchen and homeless shelter. She meets Lord Nathaniel Linfield, the 7th Earl of Dartmouth, in an unusual way. They begin to work together and the attraction between them grows. Nathaniel does not know the whole sordid details of Bess's background, but wants to get to know her. Nathaniel grew up at the knee of his wonderful father. His father was a great orator and had a profound influence in Parliament. But Nathaniel did not have the hutzpah for public speaking. But he is his father's son and he is intelligent and considerate. He had the heart of a politician, he just needed guidance and help putting himself and his thoughts together. Then he met Bess and everything changed their lives. A wonderful book full of emotion, drama, forgiveness and humility. I loved it and I highly recommend it.

Its fortunate that the author did not state the the time period or the lack of research would have been even worse. for the H and h to immediately call each other by first names ,without even invited to do so,is rude even today. that shes working as a secretary ,but horse drawn carriages abound ,make me believe perhaps the early 1900s. If the hero is a lord then he would not run for election. He would have a place in the House of Lords automatically unless he was a younger son. The errors were endless and distracted me from any enjoyment of the story. unfortunately I already purchased more of her books before i read this one. I hope the others are not as inaccurate.

A enjoyable story about a woman with a talent for speech writing and a Lord who wants to run for Parliament. Lady Elizabeth Byrd is hiding from society after her fiancé is hung for conning people out of their money. To make matters worse her father a Baron also was part of the scheme. He ran away to parts unknown. Leaving poor Elizabeth to face the scorn of society. Lord Linfield is handsome and rich a perfect catch in society eyes but he prefers being alone with his dog. His mother is pressuring to marry and he decides to follow in his father’s footsteps and run for office. The problem is he is uncomfortable speaking in public. His first public speech was horrible and in the Rising Sun newspaper he is scorned by political writer LB. He realizes he will never be the great politician his father was without help. He contacts the mysterious LB and asks him to dinner at house. To his shock LB Lady Elizabeth and her editor of the paper Irene show up. He is surprise to see the political writer is a woman and a very attractive one at that. He strikes a bargain with Lady Elizabeth to teach him how to be more comfortable and to write his speeches. He will pay her well and keep her secret of political writer LB being a lady. Lady Elizabeth has many issues due to her father and fiancé betrayal and Lord Linfield is trying to live up to his father’s legacy. Eventually both will put aside their difference and work together and heal Lady Elizabeth heart.

I loved everything about this smart romance. Lord Nathaniel suffered the tragic murder of his father a year earlier and has finally decided to grow up and be productive, helpful, and hopefully a member of Parliament like his father had been. He is tall, handsome, and an insider. What he did not know at first was he was completely incompetent at making political speeches--a must have ability if he is to succeed. Then a political analyst for The Rising Sun newspaper pans him, with brilliant verbiage to boot. If only he had that way with words. He decides to hire the make to ghostwrite his speeches, but it shocked when two women arrive. His eyes are opened by this brilliant-minded women who agreed to help him--turns out in more ways than one. His respect and fondness deepen, but will his ever find the words. Will they ignore Society's expectations and follow their inner hearts. So warming, with smart language, ideas, and a handful of other characters who simply delighted the cockles of my heart as I got to know and love them all. Felt like I had more HEAs than expected by the end. What is not to love about this story--Ms. Abigail Agar has done it again and knocked it out of the park! Some riches to rags to discovering true wealth of character for adorable, lovable Lady Elizabeth "Bess" Byrd. I was impressed with this endearing story.

Lady Elizabeth Byrd's is working at a newspaper called The Rising Sun as a secretary the publisher Irene Follett. She begins to ghostwrite political analysis and one of the gentlemen she writes about his Lord Nathaniel Linfield, his father was a Member of Parliament and had been one of their brilliant members. He had been killed several years before this time. Elizabeth used LB as her pseudonym in writing the political assays and she had really bad things to say about Nathaniel and his speechmaking. Nathaniel knew his speechmaking horrible but he didn't know what to do about it, he couldn't find out who LB was so he sent a letter The Rising Sun asking LB to have dinner with him. So Elizabeth's and Irene showed up at his house for dinner. Nathaniel thought LB was making a joke on him but he discovered that LB was Lady Elizabeth Byrd and he hired her to help write his speeches. To find out what other actions occur you need to read the book and the extended epilogue. It's a good book...
