Compared to other books on missions, the colorful cover and Jeannie’s welcoming tone can make this book seem light and breezy, but, in fact, it’s full of substance. Jeannie knows her stuff.The basic purpose of the book is to provide a roadmap of sorts for someone to get from being curious about missions to actually making it to the field. Because there’s a lot to cover, the book (in general) prioritizes breadth over depth, but there is A LOT of breadth! At each step in the journey, Jeannie gives you a lot to think about.Things I appreciated about the book were:* It’s very actionable. Jeannie doesn’t just talk theory, but pulls from her own experience and does an excellent job of breaking down how she went through each phase in her journey to the field.* The author’s tone and writing style. She comes across as a normal person. She has a lot the same thoughts, doubts, and reservations that I think most of us have, but she still made it to the field. It makes getting there feel a lot more doable.* Good storytelling. Sometimes I force myself through a book because of the value I perceive I’ll get from it. That wasn’t the case here. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I think the plentiful use of stories and anecdotes was a big factor why. It was a fun read.* The Grow to Go Test in the back. If you’re serious about going, take the test and use the results like a checklist. It’s not perfect, but it will give you a road map to work from.Overall, I think this is a great addition to the variety of books on missions out there. Its style will be sure to appeal to people a lot of other books won't, and the function it serves is unique in its genre.

Wow, Jeannie Marie's book is so easy to read and with her gentle encouragement, I feel I even could start a conversation about Jesus with someone who has yet to discover His grace and love. Jeannie Marie points out that Jesus was a refugee (page 50) and we can combat our fears of sharing the love of Christ with the nations, who have fled from their country because of war, violence and persecution to America through gaining facts, understanding and love. I'm not quite finished reading the book yet but I am learning and gaining confidence that sharing the gospel of Christ is important and not as scary as I may think. Thank you JM for this gift of encouragement!

if you're wondering about, thinking about, worrying about, or already planning on being obedient to Jesus and the Great Commission, this is probably THE book you need to read! In fact it covers the main points of dozens of books I read in several graduate level classes in Missiology. In fact I think this book covers the main points of all the books I read for that DMIN program. I went to India 15 months ago to work with some folks from my Denomination and am scheduled to go back at the end of the month for a couple of weeks. This book reminds me why I go.

Many of us are looking for good tools to prepare our friends for something like the Perspectives course ... and to help Perspectives alumni to share their vision with their circles of influence. This book is a great new tool for the toolbox. Jeannie Marie (a Perspectives instructor) has done us a great service by bundling many insights and resources in a user-friendly, readable book and in a companion website that includes links to brief videos. (Check out the book and the whole package.) I ordered one copy for myself ... and then 50 more copies to share with friends.

This is a must read for Christians everywhere! The author shares biblical knowledge, practical advice and solid information in how to engage and connect in this day and age with those around us. I have ordered many copies to share specifically in preparation for mission trips. I appreciate that this book carries information for being a better neighbor in addition to being a better traveler. These pages reveal foundational answers about “why” we should all seek to know others from among the nations whether they live close by or many time zones away. Beyond answering the “why” questions, the explorer will find a great number of ideas about “how” to do this. For those of a willing heart but not pursuing because they don’t know how to connect, you will find exactly what you are looking for right here. The gift of encountering the tapestry of humanity is one that no one should miss. My family believes in the principles and ideas of this book so much that several copies will be given away during this holiday season.

Dr. Max Wachtel has written another winner as far as nonfiction books go in my eyes. By far my favorite chapter in the whole book is the one pertaining to Contagious Yawning, but there is so much more information in this book than just that. I will always buy every one of Dr. Wachtel's books because he is an author and an expert I trust completely. I can't wait to see what material he intends to cover in his third book.

Thank goodness that psychopaths would seem to be rare, as the author assures us. As a lay person just trying to gain some understanding, I very much appreciate his light-handed humor. It sort of takes the edge off a terrifying reality. His "easy-reading" writing style cracks open the professional jargon and technical terms so that they make sense to someone without a background in psychology. Dr. Wachtel's humor is no mere gimmick and in no way detracts from the seriousness of his subject matter. You will come away from his book informed, not merely entertained.

This is a nice bon mot for people who have read other books on the subject. The author is charming and probably is not a psychopath. I think if the title had reflected the light hearted manner of the author I would give it another star. However for people who are just getting interested in this subject I think it is a good book to start with and the author is funny.

I rarely give five star ratings (because, let's be honest, pairing high quality content with excellent writing is very difficult to do), but Dr. Wachtel really hit the nail on the head here. He moved beyond the stereotypes that Hollywood feeds us about psychopaths and gave compelling reasons for why psychopaths are the way that the are, as well as how they fit (or don't fit) into the fabric of society. Meanwhile, he wrote with a cheeky style that had me laughing throughout (sometimes more than I should have). This is particularly refreshing, because living in a world where Law and Order and Criminal Minds exist, I didn't want to absorb more heavy content that makes me perpetually scared to walk into a dark room or get into a taxi. Intriguing work and excellent read!

This was a very quick, engaging and somewhat humorous primer on the psychopath/sociopath, but of very limited usefulness to a mental health practitioner. It accomplishes what I believe the author intended to do, which is to help the layperson understand what makes a psycho/sociopath tick and why.

I am a retired social worker and found this book to be well written and a great reminder of some basic ideas. It was fun to read and full of information I found myself learning some new things. We need more books like this for the public to read. I want one of attachment problem next.. my sister is a psychopath and scammed many therapy as well as runed allot of lives including those of her children. maybe more thoughts on what you do if you are forced to live with these people to protect yourself. over all a great book..

I enjoyed this short book. The information it contained was interesting, and I do like his light hearted manner of sharing the information. The book could have shared more indepth information, but for a short book it did very well. I learned to pay attention to the ‘mirroring’ thing in groups, and see who does what.

Small book filled with a lot of knowledge and fun at the same time. I always learn something no matter what, so I am happy. Thanks for the great book, and looking forward to more books from this author.

About the Author

Scott O'Dell was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 23, 1898. He attended Occidental College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Stanford University, and University of Rome. He worked as a technical director for Paramount, a cameraman for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and a book editor of a Los Angeles newspaper before serving in the United States Air Force during World War II. An Excerpt from Island of the Blue Dolphins There are no trees on the island except the small ones stunted by the wind. When a log came ashore, as happened once in a long time, it was always carried to the village and worked on where a chance wave could not wash it away. That the men were sent to hollow out the log in the cove, and to sleep beside it during the night, meant that they were there to watch the Aleuts, to give the alarm should Captain Orlov try to sail off without paying us for the otter skins. Everyone was afraid he might, so besides the men in the cove who watch the Aleut ship, others kept watch on the camp. Every hour someone brought news. Ulape said that the Aleut woman spent a whole afternoon cleaning her skin aprons, which she had not done before while she had been there. Early one morning, Ramo said he had just seen Captain Orlov carefully trimming his beard so that it looked the way it did when he first came. The Aleuts who sharpened the log spears stopped this work and gave all their time to skinning the otter which were brought in at dusk. We in the village of Ghalas-at knew that Captain Orlov and his hunters were getting ready to leave the island. Would he pay us for the otter he had slain or would he try to sneak away in the night? Would our men have to fight for our rightful share? These questions everyone asked while the Aleuts went about their preparations -- everyone except my father, who said nothing, but each night worked on the new spear he was making.

I read this as a child in grade school. Gobbled it up actually. I am now 53 and decided to read it again and it is still just as good as it was then. The imagery brought about by the writing is amazingly good, and you begin to feel almost a kinship with this girl. After reading it, I Googled the book and found a wealth of information about the book, the actual island, and the real story of this girl, who was a middle-aged woman by the end of the book. The island and the story of the "Lost Woman of San Nicolas" has actually been extensively studied in colleges, and archaeological expeditions have been conducted, where many artifacts were found. This book is a must read for kids, and even kids who don't like to read will likely be caught up in the story.

It's not historically accurate but it's still a great story. I think every young girl should read this. It teaches girls to be strong, and what society expects from you is often not what is best for you. For example, there's a part where she needs to build some kind of weapon to protect herself. She's afraid to do so because she's been taught that females are not allowed. She thinks something bad will happen to her if she does it. Then, she overcomes this fear out of necessity.I really think I am the kind of strong, independent woman I am because I grew up reading books like this. I have a niece now and I've already got a list of books I want her to read when she's older. This was one of the first I added to the list.

This was my favorite book as a youth. It was fun finding it and reading it again from an adult perspective. The story is engaging, well written and is loosely based on the life of a woman who actually lived alone on an island off the California coast, La Isla de San Nicolas from1835 to1853, and came to be known as The Lost Woman of San Nicolas. Little is really known about her life due to her strange language, which no one could understand. It did not bear similarity to any known languages. In the postlog of the book, O’Dell describes the woman’s life at the Santa Barbara Mission from the time that she was “rescued” to her death.This is an excellent book for children in fourth through eighth grades. Girls will love the descriptions of the self-made clothing and jewelry that she wore. Examples of these garments and the jewelry are or were on exhibit in the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles

I can't believe that I've lived nearly half a century (gasp!) without reading this classic book. I escaped it in my childhood when many of my friends were reading it. After all, it was a classic, and I couldn't be bothered with those old tomes. I escaped it throughout the duration of my teaching career because I was too busy plowing through the latest and greatest shiny stars of the publishing world. My kids will be reading and discussing either/or ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS and HATCHET during our January book club, and I'm thrilled to have nudged this one their way. We all need Karana in our lives.

I saw this beautiful old movie on television as a kid and I never forgot it. I am so happy to discover this wonderfully written book of heartbreak and survival. I purchased this for my 13 year old granddaughter and she absolutely loves it. She explained that this book made her more aware of how blessed and fortunate she is. She cried many times throughout the story of this beautiful Native American girl and her family, but finshed with a more grateful and gracious awareness of life and courage to endure difficult times.Book is paperback and easy to read. This is the book that fueled my 4th grader to read every book she could get her hands on. Then she started writing and is absolutely amazing at it. She’s in college now. This book actually was a turning point in her life. Just ordered it for my 8.5 year old but I think she’s not ready for it yet. She’s just finishing 2nd grade and she is advanced in reading but I think not mature enough for the book. Maybe in 6 months or a year.

I bought this to re-read because it was a childhood favorite. My 14 year old son picked it up before I could and he plowed through it in a few days.Island of the Blue Dolphins is a cult classic. I wish they'd make it into a movie.

I first read this novel in 9th grade. Although it was so long ago , but because the theme of the story was so inspiring, a true story, that I still remembered to the point I had to order this book again to read. It's now on my bookshelf as part of my book collection. The writing is simple to read and understand. Most importantly, It gives young people hope and to have courage to fight for survival under any harsh circumstances.
