I had a medical interpretation class where we used this book. As a native Spanish speaker and fully bilingual Span-Eng speaker I was able to spot a few mistakes (maybe 3 or 4 in the whole book) but learned a lot of medical terminology in both languages. It also teaches cultural aspects so I recommend it for anyone who wants to serve a Hispanic population through medicine.
I'm a medical student, and I spoke absolutely no Spanish and no other romance languages two weeks before the start of my family medicine rotation, which was in a predominantly rural and Spanish-speaking area. This book has been my savior. I did Fluenz level 1 for a basic introduction to Spanish, and then I worked my way through the phrases and vocabulary in the book, creating online flashcards for myself to remember and learn pronunciation. In 5 weeks, I've gone from not knowing a single word of Spanish to at least being able to struggle through basic encounters, including well child visits, post-partum visits (had to supplement for prenatal visits), going over lab results, and the basics of a complete H&P. The organization of the book by section of H&P is superb and clinically logical. The inclusion of chapters on mental health, preventive health/screenings, and diet has been very useful as well.The book has a very skimpy first chapter on basics of grammar, so it is helpful to know at least a tiny bit. However, the phrases and vocab are easy enough to remember, mostly follow similar patterns.One weakness of the book is that while it teaches you how to say and ask things fairly well, understanding what the patient says back is still a challenge if you are not asking yes/no questions.I haven't tried the DVD yet so I can't comment on that.
Great book. Definitely focuses on health care, interviews, history and physical. Great for outpatient care and E.R. care. Very well done, also covers much of the cultural aspects of understanding Spanish speaking patients and their families. It also comes with a password to view videos you can watch to augment your learning, listening to the words, pronunciations.
Everything was as expected. I'd order again. Wonderful book. I am a medical interpreter and this helps so much. Take advantage of the free app so that you can also watch the videos!! There are even subtitles in English and Spanish.

I had decent conversational skills in Spanish before purchasing this book, but when I entered the clinical setting, I realized I didn't know anything. I found this text to present the material in a straightforward and easy to follow format. It covers all of the relevant clinical content and even helped me improve on the Spanish skills I already possessed. I would definitely recommend this book.
REALLY GOOD BOOK! This second edition is so much better than the first. The first was good, but the second added excellent activities. I use this as a textbook.
