I found the Pimsleur system encouraging to go through. I really like going through the lessons and then being able to go back through them as much as I want. I need to review all the levels because I find myself forgetting phrases and words. Matching your voice to the teachers was really great in terms of improving my speaking. I received a compliment from a Spanish speaker who said he could understand me better than any other English speaker he had spoken with. I attribute that to Pimsleur and the fact that I've gone through these lessons a number of times. I don't agree with the statement in the product description which says the student will be near fluency. By comparison, the average English speaker knows / uses about 25,000 words. When I emailed Pimsleur they said that the student would learn about 500 words per level. If you completed level 5 I suppose the Pimsleur student would know about 2,500 words, which is a long way off from the breadth of words we use in English. I still have a hard time understanding Spanish TV and Spanish reading. There is a European standard to rate how well a person would be at language interpretation / translation and honestly I didn't do that well. I really have gone through the lessons exhaustively and was probably hoping I'd be a little further along. With all that said if Pimsleur came out with Level 6 or higher I'd buy it today. It is conversational Spanish so I guess that should have indicated to me that I wouldn't have mastered Spanish at this point in my learning. I still feel like I'm a decent way away though from mastery.
after hearing the sample I still have no idea of the level of the course or the actual process. A quadrolingual Linguist with post graduate degrees and completed intermediate training, I seek something advanced and effective. The marketing blather of the sample, however, would never convince me to pay over $100 for a language course which feels like more bluster than science, regardless of what a swell guy Dr Pimsler might be.
