"Autumn of Glory", by Thomas Connelly. This is the second volume of Connelly's two-volume treatise on the Confederate Army of Tennessee and covers from late 1862 to the end of the Civil War. It is primarily an extensively researched examination of the Confederate high command in the West including Jeff Davis and the assorted members of his "War Cabinet". This volume picks up with the War in progress and is about twice the length of the first volume ("The Army of Tennessee"). Readers who enjoy watching soap operas with their myriad convolutions of plots, intrigues, small dramas and story line twists will enjoy this book. The overall picture this presents is that the South defeated itself with its' internal politics and incompetence. HOWEVER... Connelly is something of a "myth-buster" and makes many very credible assertions that seem to debunk a host of the long-held ideas about the Confederates and the Civil War in general. That alone makes this an interesting read. Also very much to his credit, it's clear that he is trying hard to be as fair as he can. Connelly also provides plenty of analyses of characters, situations and events and, of course, such analyses are always subjective to no small degree. Thus the reader can have the additional fun of debating Connelly's sometimes gratuitous or contradictory positions. HOWEVER... Readers are again alerted that Connelly (in this volume) drives some of his points into the ground several dozen times more than necessary and on a few occasions repeats entire passages almost verbatim for no particularly obvious reason. I suspect this 540-page volume could have been presented just as well with 50 fewer pages.

Read this book years ago and decided to reread. Perfect study of the Confederate army in the west.

This was a great read

Classic. A must read.

I highly recommend Connelly’s two-volume history of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Tackling the entire thing is not for the faint at heart: Volume I (which covers the period from the start of the war and the army’s organization through Perryville in the fall of 1862) is 280 pages long, while Volume II (Murfreesboro through the war’s end) is 536 pages, for a grand total of 816. Moreover, Connelly is deeply focused on the big-picture questions of why the Army failed in its task of defending the West. Many Civil War buffs would probably find his battle descriptions too sparse to be satisfying: he deals with Perryville, Franklin, and Bentonville in three pages each, for example. You thus do not get lots of descriptions of what battles were like for the individual soldier, or accounts of X Regiment’s move here while Y Brigade struck the Union line there. While succinct, however, I found his battle descriptions to be clear and compelling.But Connelly’s research (he was a history professor at the University of South Carolina) is impeccable; his treatment of the internal politics of the army’s high command, riven with personality conflicts, is revealing and convincing; and his writing is elegant and vivid, fit to be ranked with that of Bruce Catton or Shelby Foote. Here, for example, is his description of the Confederate assault at Franklin:“About 4 p.m., the signal came to advance. The columns lurched forward, displaying the last great spectacle of the war. In near-perfect formation, eighteen infantry brigades, banners flapping in the wind, moved across the open plain. Save for the sound of regimental bands and occasionally shouted orders, there was little noise except for the flurry of rabbits and quail escaping the steadily moving Confederates. Half a mile south of Franklin the columns halted and shifted into a formation of two battle lines. Then came the order to charge, and thousands of yelling Confederates moved forward.”Here is his description of the Army’s final march, after its surrender to Sherman, to Salisbury, North Carolina to demobilize:“To march to Salisbury was not easy. The small, solemn band carried many lingering memories. Who could forget the sound of Hardee’s regimental bans as his stubborn corps marched from the cedar thickets at Murfreesboro for one last dash against the angle . . . the peculiar roar of the autumn wind on the rolling hills at Perryville . . . the hoarse cheers in the gathering dusk at Chickamauga, when Longstreet’s and Polk’s wings reunited . . . the smartly dressed ranks in that last glimpse of a vanishing war at Franklin?“But there were bitter memories, too. They would not forget Zollicoffer lying dead in the fog and rain at Mill Springs . . . Sidney Johnston bleeding to death in the blooming Shiloh peach orchard . . . the sheer panic when Thomas’ men scampered atop Missionary Ridge . . . the senseless, bullish slaughter that hot July day at Ezra Church . . . the sharp ice and pelting snow on the barefoot march from Nashville.”
