The book follows a monkey and a slice of cake. Cake builds a "no monkeys" fort. Monkey uses reverse psychology to win and make Cake want to be outside with Monkey, and at the end, they are friends again. The story is good because it has a moral and a happy ending.The style of writing is really great for kids just learning to read. The whole story is told in dialog between Monkey and Cake. Each page has just a single sentence. Sentences are simple and use the same few words repeated over and over again - so most sentences are make with "build/building", "fort", "monkey", and "cake". And, the full sentence, "I know." is repeated several times in the dialog. This is great for kids who are just starting to read out loud. A child who knows some sight words, and then can learn those few additional words can read this book out loud. The repetition is great for a child just begining to be able to read.From the writing style, you probably noticed that this book is a knock off of, or perhaps inspired by, Elephant and Piggie. Nevertheless, husband who likes Elephant and Piggie and 5 year old son who likes Elephant and Piggie both liked this. Anyway, it pulls off the same writing style.Recommended age is 4 to 8, and this is accurate, but more specifically, this book is perfect for a child who is just begining to recognize sight words and to be able to sound words out. The style of writing is spot on there.I have mixed feelings about owning this style of book. It's really great for a child to read through, and definitely good for kindergarten classroom, and elementary school library, or somewhere where several young children share the book. To me, it feels simple for a child to own and read, because the child can read it a few times and the value is in the simplicity. Definitely a worthwhile book for pre-K, kindergarten, or first grade. Also, better to have this and several similar books and have them where children just learning to read can shared and each use the book for a while.
I like this story on so many different levels. It speaks different things to both children and adults. How can you not love a line like 'I see no fort. You are fortless monkey!' Every couple of pages I found myself giggling.This simple tale of Monkey and Cake is the tale of inclusion and exclusion, a hot topic in our world today, as well as kindness and friendship. I can't help as an adult thinking about this from a political point of view, but I I don't necessarily think that that would be something everyone picks up on.The other wonderful thing about this book is that it is a great beginning reader book for my preschoolers. The words and phrases are generally simple and the sentences short. There are lots of sight words to recognize and the feeling of accomplishment after every page read. I absolutely enjoyed story and will definitely seek out more of them from Drew Daywalt.
This new beginning reader series features best friends - a monkey and a...cake? That's right. An anthropomorphic cake and his monkey pal are the stars of this new series. Don't be alarmed by the weirdness. Just read the book with your child. Or let you child read to you if they're ready for that. Cake is building a fort and no monkeys are allowed in it! Monkey wants to join his friend in the fort and is upset when he is denied entrance. But Monkey is very smart. Can he trick Cake into seeing things his way? I think making kids laugh is one of the best ways to show them the joy of reading. Everyone loves to laugh! Monkey are Cake are an odd couple to be sure but that is doubtless part of their appeal. This is a fun story and there is at least one more Monkey and Cake story available. I hope more will be coming soon.
Amazon is going to have to create a new book category: Apes & Cakes. Personally, I don't grasp why one character in this story is an animal and the other is a type of food. Cake builds a fort and excludes Monkey. Monkey turns the predicament around by saying he also has a fort--the entire world outside of Cake's wall. (Yes, there's an imaginary WALL.) Cake then decides his fort is no fun without Monkey. This story can make a young child think about the limits of a fort and wall, and how exclusion may hurt the feelings of others, plus limit friendships and fun. Not bad lessons to learn, but I still can't warm up to the Monkey & Cake combination. It's too odd.
The book looks very much like many Dr Seuss early readers - with big white spaces on the pages and very scarce text in big bold letters, for easy reading by the beginners.In the story, Cake (one of the two characters) suddenly declares that he is building a fort and Monkeys are not allowed in there. We do not know what happens before, but as it is, Cake sounds really mean. Monkey get really sad about it, but than comes up with his own idea on how to fix the situation. Monkey is thinking outside the box, just he did in the other story. He wins, and they are friends again.Now we have to build forts every night.
Cake and Monkey are at it again...Cake has built a fort, but there's a problem. Monkey is not allowed to enter the fort because he's a monkey and monkeys are not allowed. Through this short children's story, cake learns the value of inclusion and that walls don't just keep others out, they keep us locked in (perhaps there was a bit of a political undertone to this book as well). I do like the illustrations and the text is a short and quick bedtime read. I like that the author has a list of questions at the back of the book that you can use to engage with your child concerning what you just read.
The Monkey & Cake book series is worth a read with your little ones. “This is My Fort†expresses important lessons about inclusion and how exclusion only narrows our worldview and opportunities. Also the writing style of short, repetitive dialogue between the characters works well for early readers. If you enjoy reading the Elephant and Piggie series (which has a similar setup and style of writing) you may also find Monkey & Cake just as amusing, playful, thoughtful, and educational.
